Earth Day and Health -- are they related?

1:42 PM Fri, Apr 25, 2008 |

Earth day was April 22nd. Many people don't give this day much thought or attention. I mean, really, you can't "buy" the earth a present like you can for someone's birthday or another holiday. But maybe you can do something for the Earth - it gives us literally everything we need, yet as a whole, we're not giving back and providing it the attention it deserves and needs to be around forever.

Let's explore 3 tips to help make this earth a safer, healthier place so it can be around for generations to come.

1.Eat locally. Spring is in the air and Farmer's Markets are popping up everywhere! Not only does local food taste better, because you're eating it closer to when it was actually picked, you're also feeding you body more nutrients. And, in terms of Earth Day - think about the difference of a crop that was picked that morning and is now 100 feet from the field vs. one that was picked in another country and shipped across the ocean to get here. The fossil fuel that is saved is significant. Think globally, eat locally!
2.Walk or ride your bike instead of drive a car. These are of course both fantastic forms of exercise for your body, but if every person made a conscious effort to do this on a daily basis, we could truly reduce the cars on the road and, therefore, the emissions and gas. And with fuel prices these days, it seems like a true win win for all! At the very least, carpool with someone - a co-worker to the office in the morning, or try public transportation. Every little step counts towards the bigger picture.
3.Bring cloth bags to the grocery store. When you're picking up ingredients to make Sunday dinner for your mother, bring your own bags. Estimates suggest we discard over 100 billion plastic bags each year! Think about every trip you take to the grocery store; that number can add up significantly. Pick up some reusable cloth bags to make your shopping trip a better one for Mother Earth too.

There you have it - 3 tips so you can do your part to help the Earth. If we abuse it, it's not going to be around forever. Each and every person needs to play a role in helping make this earth a better place!
