Some Steve Henry Notes

May 20, 2007

Just some thoughts and news about Steve Henry's campaign, since there seems to be alot of interest.

1) Henry's TV ads attacking Lunsford and Beshear haven't been "pulled" off every TV station. I got confirmation that one of the ads ran shortly after 6:30pm on sunday on WKYT-TV in Lexington. My suspicion is that the traffic manager had either left for the weekend or didn't make the changes needed to replace the attack ad with one of Henry's positive ads and it wasn't the Henry campaign's fault.

2) HOWEVER, the notion that Henry "pulled" the ads because he "wasn't comfortable" with them is falling on deaf ears here. Here's the timeline as I know it.
Thursday: Henry's campaign buys time to start running the attack ads beginning thursday night. At least at WHAS-TV, the buy is only through friday night with the ads leaving the air (unless renewed) and being replaced by positive ads on saturday.

Friday morning at 11 a.m. Mark Hebert and Ryan Alessi interview Henry outside WHAS radio. Henry defends the ads, saying he feels good about them because voters "deserve to know the truth" about Lunsford and Beshear.

Friday afternoon about 4 p.m. The traffic manager at WHAS-TV says Henry's ads are only running through friday night. Matt Tungate, Henry's spokesperson refuses to comment except to say that "it's a strategic decesion" and the ads will run as long as the Henry campaign believes they need to get their point across.

Friday night about 7:50 p.m. I get a call on my cell phone just before going on the air on KET'S Comment on Kentucky show. I'm read a story from the AP wire which says Henry is "pulling" his TV ads. I say later on Comment on Kentucky that I'm not sure Henry "pulled" anything since the information I had was that the negative ads were only scheduled to run, at least on WHAS-TV, for 24 hours.

3) As I reported here first, Henry's campaign manager is back in Oklahoma despite Henry's assertion to Alessi and me that C.D. Marshall was in Louisville on thursday and Henry talked to him on his cell phone. The phone call part is presumably true.

4) Henry has met with either KSP investigators or the special prosecutor. He says the meeting was at his insistence, to turn over documents linked to Leslie Holland's work on his U.S. senate exploratory committee last year. Henry rejected the notion that he had been "interviewed" by the special prosecutor or state police detectives.

5) Despite all of this and other problems, Henry still has a shot to leap over Lunsford, into second place and into a runoff with Beshear. His ads featuring his well-liked wife are good ones and an alarming number of voters have said to me "I don't know if I like Steve Henry, but I really like his wife. I think I'll probably vote for him." And remember, the latest Survey USA/WHAS11 poll shows Henry is the leading vote getter in the Louisville area, which includes Jefferson and surrounding counties. Henry got 33% of the vote there. So if Louisville voters go to the polls on primary election day in greater percentages than the rest of the state, Henry could squeak into the runoff.

While the CJ Bluegrass poll was pretty similar to the SUSA poll overall (Bluegrass had a higher undecided), they had totally different numbers for the Louisville area.

Bluegrass:

Beshear 33
Henry 21
Lunsford 16

SUSA:

Henry 33
Beshear 23
Lunsford 20

I guess one of them has to be wrong.
