Lunsford Pumping His Own Poll
May 18, 2007
The value of polls paid for by the candidates is limited, at best, and generally say what the candidates want to hear. So I take them with a grain of salt. But here's a portion of the memo Lunsford is sending to his supporters:
Dear friend,
Enthusiasm for the Lunsford-Stumbo ticket is growing as we head toward
Tuesday's election. Bruce and Greg are drawing large crowds and lots of interest in the final days before the primary.
Polls show that momentum is moving our way after the KET Debate Monday night.
Our latest internal poll shows that the race is tightening.
Penn, Schoen and Berland Poll, May 16-17
Bruce Lunsford & Greg Stumbo 22.0
Steve Beshear & Dan Mongiardo 25.8
Steve Henry & Rene True 12.9
Jody Richards & John Y. Brown III 12.1
Gatewood + Otis 3.8
DK/Undecided 23.5
The energy of supporters is peaking for the last weekend and our field organization is mobilized and growing every day. On Election Day, we've got an aggressive statewide plan to get the vote out in every corner of the Commonwealth.
Paid for by Lunsford-Stumbo for Change. Brian Wood, Treasurer.

These results appear to be virtually identical to the Bluegrass Poll, helping lend credibility to both.

Mark -- while I have no love for Lunsford-Stumbo, I do know Penn, Schoen, etal to be good, well-respected pollsters, just as I know Mellman Group (Miller's pollster) and Garin, Hart, Yang (Beshear's pollsters) to all be highly reputable.
Point is: none of these guys or any reputable pollster would allow their names to be put on bad polling. It's an ethical standard. Furthermore, it never serves the candidate to have cooked polls. They pay tens of thousands of dollars for sampling to know what it is they need to do to win.
Sure there are a few points either way in discrepancy between these polls - that is dependent upon polling sample and whether these are just horse race questions or what. To know the truth, you have to be able to see the entire poll and know methodology. You should ask to see their polling -- not just the raw numbers or the memo.

How is it moving their way after all previous publicly released polls, until Survey USA this week, showed Lunsford in the lead????
