Fletcher Has New Numbers

May 15, 2007

During a campaign stop in Glasgow today, Governor Fletcher and Robbie Rudolph threw out some new numbers that they say are correct and show the successes of the Fletcher administration. Reporter Ronnie Ellis and I were the only two reporters there but we've checked our notes and come up with the same claims. So here they are and maybe some of you can help check out their veracity:

Fletcher said the "deficit" when he took office wasn't really the one billion dollars he's been claiming, it was actually $1.7 billion. No matter what the number, Fletcher should be using the words "potential budget shortfall".

During Fletcher's years, the "base funding" for higher education has increased 20%.

Rudolph said "we've 25% more money into education over the previous administration".
He also said the Fletcher administration has invested more than $100 million in Barren County, 25% on road construction.

Fletcher also promised a "covenant with all 8th graders" that if they graduate from high school, the state will promise them "an affordable college education".

I'm checking on their education funding figures because they sound a little high to me, even when compared to the years Paul Patton was forced to slash spending in every agency to balance the budget.
