First Survey USA Poll Numbers - Steve vs. Ernie
May 25, 2007
The first Survey USA/WHAS 11 poll of the general election is out. There's no surprise that Steve Beshear is in the lead, the margin may be the surprise.
Here are the numbers on the question, "if the election for governor were today, who would you vote for?"
All Voters
62% Beshear
34% Fletcher
4% Undecided
Repubs
60% Fletcher
36% Beshear
4% Und.
Dems
86% Beshear
12% Fletcher
2% Undecided
Independents
52% Beshear
41% Fletcher
7% Und.
Northup Voters
51% Beshear
36% Fletcher
13% Undecided
Beshear leads in every area of the state with the smallest margin in NorthCentral Kentucky at 55-41 Beshear. Beshear leads among men and women, all ages and every race except hispanics, though it appears only one or two hispanics were part of the 609 likely voters who were polled.
My analysis is that the margin of Beshear's lead is surprising. But remember that Beshear wasn't the target of any attacks on abortion, 10 commandments, pay day loans or other potentially damaging issues during the democratic primary. You can bet that the Fletcher team will begin hammering Beshear on traditional conservative issues very soon. Also, Fletcher had to put up with attacks from Anne Northup, which are still fresh in voters minds.
One bad note for Fletcher, the poll interviewed a greater percentage of republican voters than would be reflected in Kentucky party registrations which run about 3:2 Democrat:Republican. The Survey USA poll included 50% democrats, 42% republicans and 8% who ID'd themselves as independents.
