Wheelin' and Dealin'

Melinda Wheeler is trying to separate herself from the pack of folks running for state treasurer. The former head of the Administrative Office of the Courts says she'll work to get rid of the office she's running for. Here's a substantially edited portion of her e-mail to supporters:

For Kentucky - For State Treasurer
It's Time for Straight Talk.

“What will you do if elected?” seems like such a simple question.
If the office of Treasurer is significant why is this such a hard question for me to answer? The reason is that the most meaningful duties have been stripped from the office over the preceding decades.
This requires candidates to find something, or make up some program or duties that would make the office relevant. I believe in efficient government serving the people and do not believe in “make work” projects at public expense. There comes a time when it is better to just stop trying to create duties and find a better way to do business.
As a result, I believe the time has come to eliminate the constitutional office of Treasurer.
There is very little substantive work done by this office. Over the years, the State Treasurer's duties have been taken away or rendered redundant by other offices of the Executive Branch. The day-to-day responsibilities of Kentucky's State Treasurer include printing checks and administering the state's Unclaimed Properties program.
II will work tirelessly to achieve the following:
· Seek a constitutional amendment from the legislature permitting the citizens to vote on the elimination of the Treasurer’s office.
Sincerely,
Melinda Wheeler

Keep in mind the guy that told her to take this position is the same guy who advised Governor Fletcher to hold a "pardon party" and televise it statewide. YEESH!
