Ernie Tidbits

April 27, 2007

I heard most of Terry Meiners' interview with Ernie Fletcher on WHAS radio friday afternoon.

Most of the questions were creampuffs that Fletcher handled easily. But there were a few interesting or funny tidbits.

Fletcher said he'll "likely" put an energy bill on the agenda of special legislation session he'll call soon, probably after the May primary. Rep. Rocky Adkins' bill that would move Kentucky toward research and use of more alternative fuels died in the 2007 session.

The governor once again fudged his numbers, but got closer to the truth of how much of a budget shortfall he inherited when he took office. Fletcher told Meiners he inherited a "302 million dollar hole" when he took office but then added "that was actually about 1 billion projected over the first 18 months". The first figure (302 million) is about right. The second (1 billion) is the number Fletcher keeps using that is blatantly false. It's also included in his latest mailer. Turning around a 300 million dollar shortfall is a darn good accomplishment, I'm not sure why Fletcher insists on embellishing.

Most of us know that Fletcher is not a big sports fan, so he probably need to stay away from sports analogies and quoting sports figures. When Meiners asked the governor if his job was tougher than expected, Fletcher responded by saying something to this effect "there's an old baseball quote from "La-sor-doe". He told "Hatchzer", "you're in the big leagues now". I'm assuming Fletcher was referring to former L.A. Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda and former Dodgers pitcher Orel Herschiser. But boy, he sure mangled their names.

Otherwise, Fletcher did a good job, sounded gubernatorial, called the merit investigation "a political witch hunt" and got off the air.

Mark,

Apparently, he also mentioned that he hopes to have a new Economic Development Secretary named within a few weeks. This search has been even more secretive than the Education Commissioner search. Not one local economic developer has been asked for their input. The position was supposed to eliminate politics but the Gov. is rushing to find a politically beneficial candidate so he can get a bump in the primary. He should be waiting until after the election so we get the best possible pool of candidates. But that doesn't stop ol' Ernie.

Mark, the $1 billion is from this Patton report. Actually Patton projected $2.7 billion for the four years of the Fletcher administration on page 22. Here's a link to the report:
