Ramsey Vs. Damron
March 06, 2007
University of Louisville President James Ramsey occasionally shows off his thin skin and a committee meeting in Frankfort provided a little dust up with state rep. Bob Damron of Nicholasville.
Ramsey was testifying before the House Health and Welfare committee against a bill that would bar state agencies from offering health insurance to domestic partners of employees. Ramsey was talking about his university's need to offer health insurance to the unmarried partners of university employees. Ramsey cited four reasons, one of which is that it extends health coverage to more people at no cost to the university or taxpayers. The employee pays the full premium for the extra coverage. But Damron, one of the biggest backers of the constitutional ban on gay marriage and an insurance agent by trade, wasn't buying it. He told Ramsey that U of L must be subsidizing that insurance coverage. Ramsey said they weren't. Damron persisted. Ramsey responded bruskly "we appreciate your thoughts". Damron persisted. An exasperated Ramsey rolled his eyes, angrily said something to the effect of "I'm telling you the truth!!!" and again told Damron "we appreciate your input on that". The back-and-forth ended when committee chairman Tom Burch called on a different member.
