Filing Deadline Capers

January 30, 2007

Notes from a day spent outside the Secretary of State's Office:

Did you know Greg Stumbo's middle name is Damron?

Mike Caperton waited around the Secretary of State's office to see who else might file for the Court of Appeals seat vacated by Robbie Dyche. When it started getting late, Caperton decided to go ahead and file his papers. When I jumped up with my camera to get some video of him filing, the blue jean wearing Caperton stopped and didn't hesitate to reach into his coat pocket. He explained that he didn't wear a tie very often but kept one handy in emergencies, pulling a clip-on out of his pocket so he'd look a little more distinguished on camera.

The best story of the day involved MaDonna White of Louisville. White wanted to file for governor but couldn't find a running mate. So she walked into the capitol looking to file for Secretary of State. What she didn't know is that she needed two registered democrats to sign her papers. She only had one - her husband. So White walked into the capitol hallway and openly asked any registered democrat, including reporters, if they'd be willing to sign her candidacy papers so she could run for office. WAVE-TV photographer Dale Mader obliged, signing off on White's documents. She's got two opponents in the democratic primary. Trey Grayson is unopposed in the GOP primary.
