More on Govs Race

November 17, 2006

The negotiations on the democrats side is fluid. Here are some tidbits to get you thinking:

Jack Conway is expected to meet with State Treasurer Jonathan Miller over the weekend. How about a Conway-Miller "young democrats for the future" ticket? Well, a spokesman for Miller says the treasurer is not interested in being Lt. Governor but is seriously considering a run for governor. How about a Miller-Conway ticket?

Then early next week, Conway is meeting again with Brereton Jones. It appears Jerry Abramson's folks, who were pushing the mayor to run for governor, are now spinning reporters and Conway on the idea that he should run. And they're not the only ones. Some of the self proclaimed "good government" folks are worried about Jones' fixation on casino gambling and the possibility that his administration could be corrupted by it.
Jones supporters say he ran an administration that was "scandal free". That's not exactly true....remember the P.I.E. campaign donations? And the questions about the Breeders Award program. Jones says P.I.E. got nothing for its money and all of the Breeders Awards he received were given to charity. But any opponent will hammer him on those and other deals during his administration. In other words, it looks like a Jones-Conway ticket may be on the ropes, maybe not because of anything they're doing or not doing, but because of all spin doctors working both men. And forget the rumors you hear that Ben Chandler is still considering a race for governor. Even though it's as close to a sure victory as any candidate will get, Chandler loves his job, his time with his family and the prospect of running for U.S. Senate in a couple of years.

I believe this one applies "Unless each man prodiuses more than he receives, increases his output, there will be less for him than all the others", doesn't it?

What's with all you press people when it comes to Chandler?? He is the worst candidate the democrats could rum; the guy almost lost to Jody Richards in 03 and he outspent Richards 3 million to $700,000 either all of the press has a short memory or could it be you would like to throw Chandler under the bus? Chandler is not the person the vast majority of kentuckians want; they want a consertative, ethical, God fearing person to lead our state. Jody Richards should throw his hat in the ring for governor; he would beat them all.

Mark,

Your declarative regarding Ben Chandler's chances in 07 -- "...it's as close to a sure victory as any candidate will get..." -- strikes me as the very essence of hyperbole. In case you forgot, Chandler was walloped by Fletcher in 03, and the governor has a $1 million fundraising lead to boot. The RGA, to boot, will likely support Fletcher's candidacy at the level they did previously, and the last thing McConnell wants leading up to his 08 re-election is a democrat in the governor's mansion. Perhaps you should reconsider your analysis.
