Chandler's Out, Charlie's In?????
November 27, 2006
Ben Chandler will make it official on Tuesday, he's not going to run for governor in 2007. So the scramble for the Democratic Party nomination will continue and get more confusing as Louisville businessman Charlie Owen has reentered the picture.
After laying low for months, sources tell me that Owen made a flurry of phone calls over the Thanksgiving weekend, trying to drum up support for his candidacy. Today (Monday, Nov. 27) he's busy trying to find a running mate. He had a meeting with State Treasurer Jonathan Miller today to talk about an Owen-Miller ticket.
And Chandler could be in the middle of trying to help Owen put together a ticket. Remember, Owen was Chandler's running mate in 2003. Chandler may feel some allegiance to a guy who threw thousands of dollars of his own money into a race that was lost.
Also, several powerful Democrats are convinced that another Louisville businessman, Bruce Lunsford, is interested in one more race for governor. I talked to Lunsford last week and he flatly told me he had no interest in running for governor and couldn't figure out who was starting the rumors that he was interested. Lunsford dropped out of the 2003 democratic primary and threw his support to House Speaker Jody Richards. Richards lost to Chandler but Chandler still blames his loss in November, in part, on Lunsford's barrage of T-V attack ads aimed at Chandler. At the time of this writing, Lunsford is traveling and couldn't be reached. Owen hasn't returned a phone message.
On the Republican side, Ernie Fletcher officially filed his papers for reelection today in the Secretary of State's office.

Miller was only being polite to Owens. Charlie Owens really does not have anything to offer but money. However, in this political climate you need credability as much as $$$ in order to win.
Owens without $$$ is in the same league as Otis Hensley.
A Miller-Conway ticket would have more credability than a Owens-Miller ticket.
The best ticket around would be a Chandler-Luallen ticket.
