On a day that several believed would belong to great 3-year-olds winning Breeders' Cup races, there was only one whose connections were able to raise some hardware. J. Paul Reddam's Red Rocks an Irish bred colt was victorious in the $3-million John Deere Turf.
The win gave jockey Frankie Dettori two wins on the day, and made him the likely favorite for the Shoemaker awared presented to the most outstanding jockey on Breeders Cup Day.
"To win one Breeders' Cup race is a miracle and two goes beyond that," Dettori said. "I knew Ouija Board was my best chance. I am luck but I dind't know this lucky, it's been a fabulous day."
The day may have been extra grativating for Dettori who has been involved in a few incidents in past Breeders' Cup races including Swain and Fantastic Light in past Cup rides. "I try and forget the incident and put i behind me. We all make mistakes, the crowd had some fun remarks to say to me, but it was all in good fun."
The American horses ran very respectable in this year's turf after getting dusted last year with the Europeans running 1,2,3,4 with the 4 horses they had sent over. This year aside from the European Red Rocks who is owned by the American J. Paul Reddam, former Breeders' Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now ran a huge second, English Channel was third, and Rush Bay finished fourth.
