School vs. Reality

Being here for the time that I have, has opened my eyes up to so many things.

In school I only got a small taste about the outside workforce and people in general. Western Kentucky is a very good school for journalism, but it hasn't given me that extra step to do better than I have. I'm not knocking Western because there are so many things that have got me to the place that I am today. And, I'm not sure that any one is really prepared to go out in the so called '' real world."

I have learned so much here about people and how they view the media in general. I know it would be different for every station, because some stations have more people to deal with, and a lot more news to deal with. I am grateful for my internship here in a good market, surrounded by hard working people. I know that in my future this internship will always be something to look back on.

Playing Football Can Hurt

Recently I helped Erik out at the Paul Hornung Golf Scrammble, where something like 30 Hall of Famers and Heisman winners were planning. Some names like Mike Ditka, Deacon Jones, Mike Rozier and Gale Sayers were all there.

And the thing I came away with most from this event is that these guys have good stories and they all have serious physical problems now. Hopefully, most of them are secure financially for the rest of their lives, but they all must hurt every morning when they get up. Deacon Jones has some of the most crocked fingers you ever could see, and almost all of the guys were limping, some very badly.

It amazed me that some of these guys were the best players of their day. But, I also took away that these guys didn't walk around sorry for their injuries. In fact, they were really cool guys, especially Deacon Jones. He sat with us for probably 30 minutes talking about different stories from his playing days, which I won't repeat. This was probably the best experience of my internship so far, and hopefully I will be able to meet other interesting people and learn more good stories.

The First Couple Weeks As An Intern

The first couple of weeks working as an intern here at WHAS11 have been very exciting.

I was very nervous starting the internship here because of the opportunity I faced. Not every student gets a chance to work as an intern in a top 50 market. I knew coming into this that I would leave a much better journalist than when I started. I am now in my fourth week here and I am loving every minute of it. There are so many experiences that have helped me grow, so many things that I couldn't possibly touch on. I enjoy going out in the field with reporters and seeing just how much they have an impact on the community. Hopefully, one day I will be in the position they are in.

Update

It's a very slow time in the sports world now. With the World Cup over, only Major League Baseball remains, and the college teams are not busy now.

But, the great thing about it is that some things that normally would not get covered can be. A story about a man who hit two holes-in-one and a 720 dunk are just examples of things that normally would not make the cut. I think its interesting to see both Kyle and Erik put together a sportscast now when the stories are not as obvious. Anyway, I would tell people to watch sports more often during July and August because there will be more interesting stories that they probably have not heard about.

First Update of the Summer

This is my first entry for the summer. Up to this point, I have been able to see and in some cases practice most of the jobs the sports department has. I have now worked here four weeks and have become accustomed to how things are run.

For my first few shifts of the internship, I was only given small tasks to do, like minor editing and logging tapes, or helping out at an event. But for me, this was very good because I needed experience in tape-to-tape editing, and by the end of my first week, I felt I had become comfortable with the editing machine. Over the course of the next three weeks, I have been allowed to practice shooting, write a practice package using footage from the Dew Action Sports Tour. I was also allowed to go to the State Softball Tournament by myself to cover that. For the last two weeks, I have went on-set and performed a mock sportscast from the one Kyle Draper does at 6PM. This is really giving me a great ammount of experience and practice. Hopefully, things will continue this way for the next two months.
