Hot and Heavy

December 06, 2006

I have a new appreciation for the police officers who have to deal with meth labs. Did you see me decked out in the haz mat suit on Tuesday?

I wanted to get a better idea of the precautions taken by the Clandestine Lab Enforcement Team, so I met LMPD Sgt. Stan Salyards with Metro Narcotics. That unit has one truck that reports to all meth lab busts. It's a box truck that is housed at the Okolona Fire Department and has all the supplies for those officers.

The moon suit itself feels thin, but is airtight. You wear both latex gloves and thicker gloves that are more clumsy to use. The boots are orange and thick. A special tape is used to seal the suit at the neck, the hands and feet.

On top of all that, each officer has an oxygen tank and mask. It's not heavy at first, but after searching a home for meth and dealing with nooks and crannies, I can only imagine how cumbersome it can become.

Salyards tells me that, even in cold weather, the officers will lose a pound of sweat. And that has nowhere to go but pool inside the suit. Nice image, huh?

As of December 6, LMPD has made 51 meth busts and made at least 127 meth-related arrests. That's a lot of haz mat suits.
