JUMPING JUNE SUMMARY

6:10 PM Tue, Jun 30, 2009 |

Alright, I'm calling our June of 2009, "jumping June". Why you ask? Well, the last half of the month included not only jumping temperatures and humidity, but also rainfall.

Our heatwave lasted around 12 days, starting on the 17th with our first 90 degree day of the year. We ended up with 8 days at or above 90 degrees. A little above the average of 6.5 days for the month.

The humidity was another issue during this time. ...

New Weather Satellite In Space

5:55 PM Tue, Jun 30, 2009 |

Certainly good news. We meteorologists rely heavily on the GOES weather satellite program. GOES 14 made to space just a couple days ago. These satellites are geostationary, which means they hover over the same spot above the Earth, traveling or spinning at the same rate as the Earth spins to stay put...Here's more from NOAA...

"I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW..."

9:43 PM Sun, Jun 28, 2009 |

...the humidity is gone!" Isn't that how that classic song goes?

Seriously though, did you see that sunset Sunday evening! Beautiful and clear. Our high humidity over the last 12 days has just been clogging up the air. It's amazing how much farther and clearer you can see objects when the air is clean and muggy-free. Pilots call it "severe clear", "unlimited visibility". The humidity has been dropping steadily, it's kind of hard ...

2nd Wettest June

5:01 PM Sun, Jun 28, 2009 |

It looks like we'll end up June as the 2nd wettest ever. Sunday was our last real good chance at rainfall to get us at or above 10.11 inches of rain, to tie or break the record rainfall amount for the month. 9.22" will do it I think.

Dry weather is on the way to kick off July, cooler too!

Record Wet June

8:28 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |

So far 9.23" of rain for June.

The record wettest is 10.11" set in 1960.

We're second so far! More showers and storms are in the forecast for Sunday, so the record could be broken! It may have been wet, and certainly keeping us busy, but at least it's green outside.

90 Tracker

5:43 PM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |

So far we've had 6 days at 90 or above, the hottest today, Thursday the 25th, at 92. On average there are 6.5 days at 90 or above in June. So, we're close to the norm, just getting a late start with the heat wave this month. We'll have two more days in the 90s (Friday and Saturday). Looks like Saturday will be our hottest day of the year with mid 90s possible.

The problem lately ha...

Happy Father's Day!

9:41 PM Sat, Jun 20, 2009 |

So, my perfect Father's Day would include golf, swimming, and fishing. Not particularly in that order, but that sounds about right. What a typical American dad! They make greeting cards just for boring old dad's like me :). I guess it's not too bad to be normal.

My dad taught me how to fish, and we used to go as often as possible during the summer at Brookville Lake (not too far up the road, not too far from Cincinnati). Then, w...

Storm Reports Galore!

3:11 PM Thu, Jun 18, 2009 |

What a strong and severe line of storms we had this morning and early afternoon. We had every threat but a tornado out there with winds more than 70 mph, hail, flooding rain, and frequent lightning. Here is a list of the dozens of storm reports around Kentuckiana. This same storm system created hundreds of reports from eastern Nebraska through southeastern Kentucky.

High Heat Index

2:53 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |

It's that time of year to break out the heat index charts. If you are going to be playing or working outdoors, take this heat heading our way seriously. We've seen it time and time again where a lack of water and rest results in heat illness, even death. Our highs Thursday and Friday will be in the low to mid 90s, with dew points around 70 (Humid!), and the humidity around 45-55% during the peak heating. Calculate late the heat index yours...

A Busy Tuesday Afternoon

11:45 PM Tue, Jun 16, 2009 |

A fast moving "Bow Echo" (squall line) raced through Kentucky today. Around 3 pm the southern segment of this line started intensifying, and robbing the northern part of the bow of it's strength. As a result most of the severe weather remained well south of the greater Louisville area. This line of storms did produce over 50 wind damage reports of down tree, power lines and r...

Strong to Severe Storms Tuesday

11:08 PM Mon, Jun 15, 2009 |

Tomorrow could be a very busy day...! Almost all the ingredients are coming together for a round of severe weather... stationary/warm front pushing north; low riding along the front; dew points in the upper 60s to low 70s; decent shear; low level jet (35-45mph) developing just to our west and shifting east; Jet stream starting to push south in the afternoon... However, the variable in this equation is the cloud cover we currently have, if w...

We hit 89 twice on the 1st and 2nd of June, and 87 on May 22nd. Our average first 90 degree day is June 7th, so we're a bit past that now. So, when will it happen...looks like this coming Thursday (Our last Thursday before Summer!). Here's your 7 Day Forecast!

Strong/Severe Storm Wednesday-Thursday

8:43 PM Tue, Jun 09, 2009 |

A complex of severe storms have been pounding KS and MO all afternoon and this evening. These storms have produced (so far) 5 tornadoes, 63 damaging winds, 182 large hail. This cluster of storms will head our way overnight, but they will weaken as they arrive by tomorrow morning. With that said we could still see some locally heavy downpours, gusty winds (30-40 mph) and small hail. As the storms dissipate they will leave outflow boundries ...
