February 2009 Archives
When folks call the station and report seeing strange things in the sky, well, sometimes I'll chalk it up to someone having too much to drink, or they're just off their medication. However, I've ha... It's back to the real world after a couple weeks of baby leave. My wife and I welcomed our baby boy Brady to the world about two weeks ago, on Valentine's Day actually. I have two really important jobs - being a good dad, and being a good weatherman. Both can be tough, both require long hours, but both are incredibly rewarding. I do want to thank the Stormteam, Monty, Jamie, and Reed for adding some extra hours and helping me out over the... Showers and a few thunderstorms will push through Kentuckiana overnight. The Storms will produce locally heavy rain, gusty winds 40-45 mph and maybe some small hail. Look for most of the showers/storms to be east of us around sunrise... ...The latest models are starting to come together on the Saturday storm. The low will be to our south and then east through the day on Saturday, but with the moisture wrapping into our area, we could see a mix of rain and snow in the south with snow in the central and northern sections. Just how much is the big question. Until the low starts to actually form, we will be going just off of model guidance. Bu tomorrow afternoon we should have a... Windy and warm tomorrow out ahead of an approaching cold front. Look for highs to be in the mid 60s by the afternoon
Models are pushing a strong cold front through the area overnight Thursday. With the warm moist... One of the best things about this area is the weather. I really love the cold and the snow, but really, haven't we seen enough?! How about giving us a good 2 week stretch of warmer weather? Ok, how about 1 week? Alright, fine, 2 days! I'll take it. We will warm above normal Wednesday and Thursday. No record heat but temps into the 60s by Thursday. We will get some rain with the cold front. Good news for all of those bulbs that are spr...
The latest run of the GFS is developing a "wave" (an area of low pressure) on a front that is just south of us... We are still in the warm air Saturday morning so it look...
Clipper still on track to arrive early Saturday morning and models are now pumping a little warm air in advance of the system. That should give us a little rain/snow mix until... Just as odd as it is to see sun showers in the summer, we are seeing sun snow showers today. You know the sight. We go from dark clouds and light snow, to full sun in about 30 seconds! No wonder every says "if you don't like the Ohio Valley weather, just wait a second and it will change!". It does make for some interesting forecasting! ...
Models are showing a nice little clipper system moving through the area early Saturday morning. GFS is painting at least .25" liquid precipitation. So right now I'm going with 1 to 2" of snow (maybe 3"). ... Get ready for a little bit of everything this week... Temperatures warming up tomorrow into the 50s. We will keep it warm on Wednesday, but add rain, thunder and gusty winds with an approaching cold front. Don't worry it won't be as bad as last Wednesday! Temperatures fall rapidly behind the front Wednesday night and the showers will turn to snow and hang around through Thursday morning. We might even see a light dusting on grassy... Top 10 list of Friday 13th myths Friday the 13th - the most dreaded date of the year. 1. Fear of Friday the 13th is called "Paraskavedekatriaphobia", derived from three Greek words. 2. Any month that begins on a Sunday will contain a Friday the 13th, and there is at least one Friday the 13th in every calendar year. ...No, I'm not saying your Valentine's date is not bad, I'm sure she's great! Really, I bet she is. Just talking about the weather. Just a few morning showers Saturday, then dry conditions will arrive by the afternoon. Your date will just want a jacket, temperatures will be dropping through the 40s, to the upper 30s by about 9pm. Remember guys, if you've done a great job procrastinating, and you're heading to the grocery st... Of course, not everyone is celebrating. There are still people without power to take care of around the area! For them and the rest of us, Mother Nature has given us a great day with lots of sun and mild temperatures. I was very suprised with the small amount of limbs around my yard when I woke up this morning. I guess all the debris that showered down on my house and yard the last 2 storms was enough! We saw winds just above 60mph in the... Winds this evening have gusted between 58-75 mph throughout Kentuckiana, resulting in a lot of damage and more than 100,000 homes without power. For a detailed list... Click Here ...
Damaging winds will blast Kentuckiana until 10 pm. Power outages continue to climb... Right now (7:45pm) more than 90,000 homes are without power in Kentuckiana. Here's a look at some of the...

Right now SPC has us in a SLIGHT RISK for severe thunderstorms. It looks like we see the chance for a fast moving squall line to race through Kentuckiana between 10 am to 2 pm Wednesday. The main threat...
After all of the trees and power lines down after the ice storm, the last thing we need is high wind to bring even more down. That is what we are looking at for tomorrow though. An area of low press... The latest models still bring us way too much wind on Wednesday. The gusts will be near 40 in the morning with a squall line moving through around noon with thunderstorms and winds gusting to 55+. Even as the squall line departs, the low approaches with the sustained winds increasing to 35-40mph with gusts to near 55. Overall, hold onto your hats and watch out for falling and blowing debris. Always plan for the worse and hope for the best!...
Wednesday looks like it could be a very active day. A strengthening low pressure system and cold front to our southwest and a ridge of high pressure to our southeast will produce a very tight pressure grad... The weather has finally warmed up! The problem is that when we get this warm in February, we usually see some bad weather to go along with it. Remember the Tuesday storms last year? We need to keep a very close eye on Wednesday as a strong cold front moves in. Damaging winds would be very bad news for everyone just getting their power back on. I know I have a few very large branches still up in my trees. I'd prefer they come down in a ni...
We're going to be keeping a close eye on Wednesday. This will be our first potential for strong storms this year. Strong low-level and upper level jet, front, low pressure, warmth, and moisture...basically lots... Temperatures warmed up to the mid-50s even in Chicago today, where a couple hundred people braved the cold Lake Michigan waters for an annual Polar Bear Plunge! They got twice as many people to do the plunge this year, organizers say, because of the extra warm weather.
A strong southerly flow will help warm us up tomorrow into the 60s. Most of Saturday should remain dry, however an approaching cold front will give us a chance for showers Saturday night through Sunday. Don't worry Sunday won't be a washout, but temperatures will drop into the mid 50s. Temperatures rebound back to the 60s by Monday and it looks like we will be dodging showers again on Tuesday. We'll need to watch Wednesday fo... Because it is on the way out! Yesterday I hit Dog Hill with the 5 man wood rocket. It flew down the ice! My 3 year old didn't like the snow and ice that was flying off my boots as I dug them in to slow us down. We would have made it over the bridge if I hadn't hit the emergency brakes. He has now decided he likes to watch me go sown while he sits up top. Dads can be a bit crazy! Hit the sleds or head off to Paoli while you can. We will... Since late December a La Nina has been developing. This is when the waters of the equatorial Pacific regions are below normal. La Nina tends to set us up with above average chances for precipitation. Here's the latest from NOAA...
You may never have heard of Heating Degree Days, but Power and Gas companies use this number to calculate how much gas goes out, and how much to charge, and so forth. Basically, Heating Degree Days are the degrees above 65 degrees. So, for one given day suppose you had an averaged out temperature of 45, you take 65 (base temp for calculating) minus 45, and you get 20 Heating Degree Days. The more Heating Degree Days, the more you're... We did a little research today in the weather center - see I told you we work (see previous thread) - and, no surprise, it's been a cold winter! Of the 92 days... "Gotta love a job where you can be wrong 50% of the time, and still keep it!" "Why can't you make it -fill in the blank-!" "You said it was going to do this, and it did this!" "You always say 50% chance, so you're right either way!" Yep, we've heard them all! But, this is the day to be nice to your local weatherperson :). My mom even sent a card! I promise, we actually do work hard...especially the last coupl... agine with the ice storm we've been dealing with, just one year ago we were battling tornadoes and severe storms. This is some seriously cold weather over the next 24 hours, so let's take it serious. Let's check on our neighbors, friends, elderly, really anyone who's power is still out, and they're sticking the outage out in their homes. If the power is out, make sure the water pipes are turned off, and drained...we don't want anymore pipes bursting! We hope everyone stays warm and safe through Thrusday morning. Wednesday Morning Wind Chills:... Yikes! As if the light snow wasn't bad enough on the icy roadways. Now we are looking at temperatures dropping into the teens with wind chills below 0 even this afternoon and evening. The models say the low 20s but Mother Nature says no way to that! The wind chill during the noon show in Jasper was -8. I wonder just how long it would take to clear out the garage? Too late now! Stay bundled up. Tomorrow morning will be another nasty one...
An upper level system will push through the area tomorrow bringing with it snow showers and much colder temperatures. Look for the temperatures to fall from the upper 20s in the morning to near 20 de... I don't know about everyone else, but I was a wet, sweaty mess yesterday. The back yard looks worse than the wind storm. The best news is that the power is back on! After 9 days in September, I can feel for those still waiting. Try to get as much of the outside cleaning done today because the really cold air arrives again tomorrow and Wednesday. Good news for the sledders, bad news for the power and tree crews. That cold, along with some... Alright you pudgy Punxsutawney Phil, how much more winter are we going to have to endure?! Will the weathercasting woodchuck not see his shadow, allowing spring to quickly arrive? Or, will the marmot meteorologist see his shadow, providing six more weeks of winter? It's kind of counterintuitive, you would think if it's sunny, and he sees his shadow, then shouldn't spring be coming then? Well, clear skies in winter are often associated wit... |
