One week later the region was struck by a super tornado outbreak overnight on the 5th and 6th of February. Sixteen tornadoes tore across central Kentucky, making it one of the largest tornado outbreaks we have ever seen. In addition to the tornadoes, straight l... Well, a few days ago, on Thursday, I mentioned a record-breaking high for Saturday of 71. Saturday, December 27th, we had a record-breaking high of 71! Hey, sometimes the dart sticks in the right spot :)! From super-warm, to storms. There's been a tornado watch out west of the Mississippi River today, with about four reports of tornadoes north of St. Louis. This line of showers and storms will be moving into Kentuckiana late Satur... We hit 38 on Christmas Day. Not bad. A bit cool, but quiet. Today, 62! Tomorrow, 71! That would be record breaking heat on Saturday. We do need to watch out for a few thunderstorms by Saturday Night though. A strong cold front is heading our way by then and it will be feeding off of that very warm and muggy air. The good news is that it will move through during the overnight hours with the heat waining. We will watch things for you, s... Last Friday we hit a record high of 69! Beating the old record by two degrees! It looks like another record high will be in jeopardy Saturday. A storm system will be positioned out west, and will give us a two day supply of warm southerly air. With a southerly wind though, also comes moisture. This is the reason why when it gets warm in the winter, it often comes with some rain. The record on Saturday is 69. Right now th...
Westbound and Northbound travelers will have the most difficulties for Tuesday afternoon and evening. Warmer, moist air will ride over the top of the cold air that's been in place, and create sleet and freez... Quiet weather? Not around here! We will see a light wintry mix Tuesday, heavy rain Wednesday morning, and more rain Friday and Saturday. So much for a restful vacation week! Stay tuned to get the most of your time. ...Ok, we've all heard about how when it's cold outside and women get goosebumbs, their leg hair seems to grow. Then, you ladies feel like you have to shave again. Oh, the burdens of womenhood. Well, today, I feel for you girlfriend! :) See, I'm usually a once a day shaver, but today, I needed another shave by 2pm. Having a 5 O'Clock shadow before 5 O'Clock is pretty manly for me. So, it got me wondering. Is it the cold air making... So far, I've seen wind chills down to minus 26 degrees in parts of Indiana, the lowest I've seen in Kentucky in -9 in Louisville and Frankfort. Wind chills will drop between zero and minus 10 overnight, even colder over Indiana. Actualy temperatures will be in the single digits, but the winds will still be up around 10-25mph, keeping the feels-like-temperatures extra low. A Wind Chill Advisory is issued when the wind chill values go below m...
Mother Nature seems to be timing the weather out just right, with the coldest air so far heading our way Sunday and Monday. The strong artic cold front will be blowing through Sund... Ok, this is the third update to this blog due to these crazy temperatures... Weathermen and women hate the word "surprise". We hate surprises, we're supposed to know what's going to happen, right! Well, today's temperatures have been a pleasant surprise! We were originally expecting upper 50s for highs, but more sunshine has popped out than expected, and the warm front surged the 60s farther north too, as a result temperature... Winter officially begins with the Winter Solstice which occurs just after 7am, on Sunday. This is when the sun's rays are farthest south over the southern hemisphere. It's also when summer begins down there. Quite appropriately it looks like some of the coldest air so this half of the year will arrive on Sunday. A cold front crosses late Saturday night, and unlocks the cold blast. Highs on Sunday will only be in the upper 30s, w... The jetstream will remain oriented over the top of Kentuckiana, keeping plentiful rain and snow chances in the forecast for at least the next week. Rain arrives overnight, through the first part of Friday. Another storm system brings rain then possibly light snow Saturday night through Sunday morning. The next storm arrives late Tuesday, first rain, then snow showers likely on Wednesday (Christmas Eve). Right now,... The lastest model runs are hinting at a fairly strong weather system heading our way Christmas Eve and with cold air in place it looks like we may get a little snow (to soon to be talking amounts yet)... We will need to watch this system as it develops. However, it does look interesting and may provide us with some tricky traveling conditions. Stay Tune...
If you wanted snow all you had to do was drive south about 20 miles... A winter storm brought significant snow and ice to parts of central Kentucky Monday and Tuesday. A narrow band of 3 to 4 inches occurred from Hartford in Ohio County, northeast to Taylorsville and on to Frankfort. South of the snow band, freezing rain caused ice to accumulation one to three tenths of an inch. In the Louisville metro and a... FREEZING RAIN AND DRIZZLE WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. What kind of weather? How about high winds, then rain, then possibly freezing rain/sleet/snow, then more rain, rain, rain! A WIND ADVISORY is in effect for Sunday (see previous blog), then a strong cold front brings rain Sunday night through M... A WIND ADVISORY is in effect for Sunday with sustained winds 20-30 mph, and some gusts possibly 40-50 mph. Be especially carefull driving on east-west oriented roadways in high profile vehicles, trucks, and SUVs. The strong winds are a result of a strong area of low pressure over Iowa countered by a strong area of high pressure over the eastern US. In the middle is a tight pressure gradient, the air is flowing fast from the high p... Alright everyone has been bugging me about the Christmas forecast... Gary Roedemeier wants a decorative snow (just enough to be pretty, but not cause any problems) and my son wants a ton of snow. Right now it looks like Gary and Cody are both out of luck... Sorry guys!
Just a few flurries have been flying this Friday, and if there are flurries, you know it's got to be cold. Temperatures are topping out today in the upper 30s. A wind direction change will bring a nice change this weekend. A southerly flow will take temperatures at or above average Saturday to the upper 40s, then perhaps even about 10 degrees above normal on Sunday to the upper 50s. So, if you have'nt hung all the lights just yet,... An area of low pressure will track northeast along a front and by tomorrow will be in eastern Tennessee. This will cause warmer moist air to overrun a shallow layer of cold air that is moving into Kentuckiana and eastern Kentucky. This overrunning pattern will allow some freezing rain and freezing drizzle to develop Thursday morning. Right now I think the best chance for freezing rain is to our east. A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY has be... Sure it is going to be colder than normal again tomorrow and Friday, but the weekend looks pretty good. Back to normal by Saturday and even warmer on Sunday. The warmer temps even last into next week. Could we finally see some relief from our heating bills?! We'll be watching! ...
A developing storm system moving out of the Central Plains will head our way Tuesday bringing us some heavy rain and very gusty winds. Winds Tuesday will be SW 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. ... After highs the last three days right around freezing, the ground and our bodies will have a chance to thaw over the next couple days. Winds will be coming from the south, and this will get temperatures a little above average Monday, near 50! Hip, hip, hooray!! Tuesday's high will be in the middle to upper 50s, but it comes with a price. It's about a 100% chance for rain Tuesday through Tuesday night. Perhaps 1-2" of rain total. ... We have a little clipper system that will be moving through Kentuckiana Saturday. Earlier this evening I had .5" or less for portions of Southern Indiana, but after looking at the latest models and upstream surface observations I've decided to up that amount to an inch or less. Another chilly bout of weather for the area! We will see a few clouds with our next clipper system but most of the snow will stay off to our north. A few light snow showers possible the further north you go. The temps will be very cold again through the weekend. Only in the 30s. Way below our normal highs. The highs begin to warm next week as another storm moves closer. This one will stick around late Monday through Wednesday. Have a s... It looks like we will continue to be under the influence of a strong Northwesterly flow, which is pumping in a lot of cold Canadian air into Kentuckiana. Giving us highs only in the 30s and lows in the upper teens and 20s. Come on... If it is going to be this cold we should at least get a little snow out of the deal! We do have a little clipper system heading our way Saturday afternoon that will give us a few flakes and if ... An approaching cold front will provide us with some rain overnight than changing to a mix of rain and snow by tomorrow morning. Temperatures dropping into the 30s by Thursday morning. Watch for slick morning driving conditions. Not only do we have some light snow and flurries possible early on Thursday, but the cold air makes a return. Big time! From the mid 50s on Wednesday, into the mid 30s Thursday afternoon. About a 20 degree... So, I have a cold, and last few days I've been sounding more like Barry White than Ben Pine. It's been pretty noticeable too, since I've been trying to give forecasts, on-air, in front of thousands of people, sounding like I'm going through reverse-puberty. When you can't talk, people do one of two things. Either they run up to you giving you tips, on how to make every kind of magical curing potion, like hot toddies, green... |
