Drought Impacts

7:39 PM Sun, Sep 28, 2008 |

Nearly all of Kentucky is experiencing at least a moderate drought, with portions of central and southern Kentucky in a severe drought status. When you hear that we're in a drought, you basically think it's dry. But, a drought has many impacts for local residents. The main impacts are agriculture and hydrology. Of course, farmers are most affected agriculturally. When we're talking about hydrology, we're talking about low rivers, reservoi...

A Week Later...

8:34 PM Sat, Sep 20, 2008 |

And, I hope you all are all doing better. What a week it has been! On Monday, when Monty and I were working on the wind storm aftermath, I looked over at him and said, "This is only Monday." I had a feeling it would be a long week, and for some, it has been very long and exhausting. Our email boxes are all overfilled here at the station with hundreds of stories from around the area. Some are good, like neighbors helping neighbors, but man...

Preparing For Severe Weather...

12:23 AM Thu, Sep 18, 2008 |

Sunday's Wind Storm demonstrated just how sudden and devastating Mother Nature can be... We should all be prepared and have a Storm Kit ready to go incase of a weather emergency. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the kit is located.

STORM KIT
- A flashlight and extra batteries (for every member of the family)
- A first-aid kit
- Prescription medication
- A portable, battery-operat...

Wind Storm 2008

6:20 PM Sat, Sep 13, 2008 |

It's a calm, refreshing end to a dramatic day. The extreme wind has come and gone, as if nothing ever happened. Except thousands, hundreds of thousands are without power, including myself and many co-workers. Trees toppled, power lines twisted, sunken boats, damaged cars, roofs blown away, fires burning...just some of the numerous reports we have received. All without a single thunderstorm.

If you are like me, when you hear about...

Ikes Storm Surge Extremely Dangerous

11:54 PM Fri, Sep 12, 2008 |

Ike is a category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 mph... This can be a little misleading... In 2005 Hurricane Katrina made land fall as a Cat. 3, yet its storm surge (and subsequent damage) was more characteristic of a Cat. 5 hurricane.

Ike is a monster hurricane of 500 miles wide and Dr. Mark Powell of NOAA's Hurricane Research Division says Ike's Ike's storm surge damage will be similar to or greater than Katrina's. So how does he ...

Ughhhhhh! Man is it humid!

1:15 PM Fri, Sep 12, 2008 |

We are stuck in the muggy soup for the next two days as the Gulf really opens up with the arrival of Ike. We may not get the bad winds and storm surge, but will feel its power in the form of heavier rain by late tomorrow. The scattered showers and storms today will be replaced by heavier and more concentrated showers and storms tomorrow. The weather calms down by Monday and we are looking at a great week ahead. So just hang out and deal wi...

A little Ike anyone?

1:18 PM Thu, Sep 11, 2008 |

Even though we aren't anywhere close to the Gulf Coast, we are still watching the tropics with great interest. The very latest from the NHC puts the remnants of Ike on top of us by late Sunday and early Monday. That could mean some serious rains. Even before that might happen, we will be pretty unsettled from Friday through the weeknd thanks to a lingering cold front.

Great couple of days ahead!

1:09 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008 |

Ohhhh, how I love the approach of Fall! Dry air returning makes everyone a bit more giddy. Outdoor plans are a must over the next two days. It will be turning sunny and dry with low humidities. Enjoy! The end of the week and weekend look pretty wet at this point. A lot of tropical moisture appears to be heading our way, so we may just get more of that needed rain. Drop that seed down and let Mother Nature do the watering for you!

The center of Hurricane Ike has is now just off the Cuban city of Trinidad. Maximum sustained winds are now reported at 80 mph. Hurricane Ike is moving to the west at 10-12 mph. This general motion is expected to continue for next day then take a north of west track. On this track, the center of Ike will move along the south coast of Cuba for the next 24 hours then cross Cuba again Tuesday afternoon before emerging into the Gulf of Mexico tom...

Ominous Ike

9:35 PM Sat, Sep 06, 2008 |

Ike is a strong Category 3 Hurricane as of Sunday night with winds sustained around 120 mph. Thankfully, the updated path is putting Ike to the south of the central Gulf Coast, and New Orleans, but this might not be a good thing for the Texas coast next week. The official forecast from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has Ike in the central Gulf of Mexico by the middle of this upcoming week, with a target somewhere along the Gulf Coast. ...

Family Of Tropical Systems On The Hurricane Highway!

10:37 PM Mon, Sep 01, 2008 |

Gustav, Hanna, and now Ike!

Gustav is now weakening into a big rainmaker as the storm moves toward east Texas. Hanna became a hurricane on Monday, and could make a landfall on the southeastern coast of the United States on Friday as a category two hurricane, the same a Gustav. Next up is Ike. Ike is now a tropical storm, but could become the fifth hurricane of the season within 36 hours. It is the 9th named storm of the 2008 hurr...
