August 2008 ArchivesHere's is a track comparison of Katrina and Gustav.
Yep, that's the way it looks for now. Our latest front has been really quiet this morning as it gets closer. The 30% chance looks good. Most folks are more concerned about the weekend weather. Be ready to sweat! It will be hot with highs at or above 90 in most locations. Not record heat, but not as comfortable as most folks would like. Now for the tropics. You've got to remember, tropical systems don't care about our computer ... Boy the weekend was HOT! Of course, what's a State Fair without high heat. We got it over the weekend, but now we can cool things back down a bit. Nice cloud cover this afternoon with, dare I say it, rain showers in the south. The center of "Fay" was just east of Jackson Miss as of 1pm. It is still moving due north which would be great news for us getting in on some heavy rain. It is still 1-2 days away though, so stick around for the la... The Kentucky State Fair has come to a finish. In a way, it is the unofficial end of the summer. One last summer blast! The fair is a wonderful magnet, bringing all walks of life together. What's great about the fair is that you can come as you are. Unlike a night out on 4th Street Live, at the fair you can show off your play clothes, not your pricy ones. Where else could I get some sort of animal pooh on my shirt and shoes and not give... Tropical Storm Fay will go into the record books as the most land falling tropical system in history. Florida took all the hits and buckets of rain, over 20 inches fell in many areas, with reports of up to 30 inches. 35 people have died primarily from Fay's flooding rains. Millions of dollars of damage to crops, businesses, and homes has occurred. The name Fay will likely be retired after causing this kind of devastation. This is an image of t... The Heat Index (HI) is the temperature the body feels when heat and humidity are combined. The table below correlates the actual temperature and relative humidity, producing a HI. (This chart is based upon shady, light wind conditions. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the HI by up to 15°F.)
Tropical Storm Fay is still hanging out over Florida. Fay made landfall AGAIN yesterday... Becoming only the fourth tropical storm or hurricane to come ashore (in the same state) three different times. Heavy... Fay is the sixth named storm of the 2008 hurricane season, and churning southwest of Cuba now, with winds only around 40 mph. But, this storm is expected to strenghten, possibly becoming a hurricane on it's track to Florida early this coming week. Right now the path has Fay at Key West, Florida Monday afternoon, then up the west coast to Tampa Bay by Tuesday afternoon. We'll watch this closely over the next several days. Keep an especially... Boy has the weather been great! We could use a little rain to green things back up but for the fair-goers, they want nothing but sun. We really are looking good heading into the first weekend of the fair. Less than a 20% chance of rain thru Sunday afternoon. Even the temps look fine. No upper 90s with 110 degree heat indicies! Get out and enjoy!!! ...It was great to have the Weather Channel crew in the weather center today. Make sure to look for the back of my head when the show, When Weather Changed History, airs this fall on the Weather Channel. It was also very enlightening talking with Ken Rowland about the Super Outbreak of 1974. It certainly was a different time then, when Ken says, the chopper pilot Dick Gilbert was the only real way to track th... Remember last August? Probably not, since you were probably in a heat induced coma state! Here's a look at some stand-out stats from the sultry August of 2007. *Aug. 1st - 20th temperatures were 90 or above. *26 out of 31 days were in the 90s. *7 record highs *5 days at 100 or above *Coolest day was 87. So far this year... We've had a few low 90 days early on, but 80s have been the rul... Our weather this weekend is shaping up to be just about as perfect as it can get in August! Last year at this time our highs were in the upper 90s to low 100s! YUCK!!! This weekend our highs will be in the mid 80s with the dew points only in the 50s. It doesn't get any better than that! We owe a big thank you to Canada for this gorgeous weather heading our way. High pressure dropping south from the upper plains will be providing u... A strong west to southwest flow will pump in some very hot and humid air into Kentuckiana this afternoon. High temperatures today will be in the mid and upper 90s. However, that is only half of the story... Our dew points now are near 70 degrees, but out to our west they are in the mid to upper 70s and that oppressive air is heading our way. By this afternoon we will be looking at a Heat Index ranging 100 to 108! With values this high suns... My golf outing was quite an adventure at Valhalla! Welcome to Valhalla was Stan's favorite saying as Andy and I duffed our way across the course. We did get to see all of it. And I do mean all of it! Fantastic course! My only problem was...my pants. Everyone else had shorts on. Now I know why. The increased fabric create a distortion in my swing thanks to a spike in the coefficient of friction. Because of that, I pushed everything way... ...A Weatherman. "Don't you just REPORT the weather?" "You've got the easiest job, you can be wrong 50% percent of the time!" "Can't you make it rain over my house?" So...No. Not true. No. We hear it all, some of it deserved. But, I would ... You can blame just about anything these days for why oil and gas prices go up. This time around, financial professionals and traders will blame newly formed Tropical Storm Edouard for rising prices. This storm is traveling slowly west, south of the Gulf Coast, an area rich in oil rigs. Exxon and Shell so far, say they have not evacuated employees, but are preparing for the storm. Edouard will likely not become a hurricane, but will streng... A heat wave will be heading our way for Monday and Tuesday. The jetstream has been keeping the extreme heat west of Kentuckiana, but will be lifting to the north, allowing temperatures to soar early this week. The thermometer still won't rise as high as our friends out west and south of us, where it will be in the low 100s around St. Louis, Kansas City, and Dallas. Many areas west now have excessive heat watches and warnings in effect. Tue... |
