Orange Air Quality Alerts were in effect Wednesday and will be again for Thursday. What does this mean? During the afternoon the heat and sunshine begin to cook the pollutants in the air, and create surface Ozone. This can be unhealthy for breathing at high levels. Thursday afternoon the Air Quality Index will likely go above 100, which can be unhealthy for sensative groups, especially children, older adults, and others with respiratory problems. If you feel you are having breathing difficulties, seek air conditioning and relax. You can take part in trying to curb high Ozone levels. Here are a few tips: 1) Mow very early or around dusk. 2) Fill up your gas tank during the evening, not the afternoon. 3) Combine errands to make fewer trips, and make trips during the evening and night if possible. 4) Set you air conditioning above 80 degrees to limit electricity usage. 5) Limit using harmful chemicals outdoors, such as paints and certain fertilizers, which can evaporate and help create poor air quality. Go to airnow.gov for more information on Air Quality Alerts. Also, try www.helptheair.org for more helpful tips. |
