July 2008 ArchivesI was hoping that this summer would just slide by without hitting 100 degrees, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen... After the showers and storms on Wednesday and Thursday get ready for a little heat wave! The last time we hit a 100 (or better) degrees in Louisville was last year, August 16 and our high was 105. Louisville was just starting to enter into a drought/heat wave this time last year... We had 21 days in a ro... We're smack dab in the middle of the "Dog Days" of summer, and the heat will build into early next week. While doing a little Dog Day research, I found out that the term really has nothing to do with your hot, lazy, dog in the backyard, and has all to do with a dog in space. Yep, the brightest star in the sky, other than our sun, is the "Dog Star", also know as, "Sirius". Ohhhh...so that's why Sirius Radio has that dog as their logo with it... Well, the Webbs made it to Louisville in one piece. It was a taxing and emotional trip, but we all seem to be doing OK now. Even the dog. Our household goods will be here tomorrow morning, so that will keep Kim pretty busy for a while. Then she might go see her sister in Cincinnati. Cousins for Cody to hang out with! We were at our house yesterday morning and as we walked up the porch we noticed a little visitor. A baby skunk. H... Highs got up to the upper 90s today around Louisville, the highest so far 97 at Standiford Field. The heat index from 100-105. Only a few off the record high of 100 set back in 1954. That's a furnace!
With all... Saturday afternoon.... We are a bit SE of Sioux Falls, SD. Driving thru a thunderstorm as this is being written. Heading toward Sioux City, IA. We stopped at a gas station in Sioux Falls. People were still chattering about the thunderstorm when we walked into the gas station. The clerk told us that it had just passed and he had never seen it rain so hard. He said about ten miles south there had been a tornado. There was no hail, ... Can you believe it, Bertha is still churning away in the Atlantic! Bertha got upgraded once again to hurricane statues yesterday with winds around 75 mph. Bertha now has a new playmate, Cristobal (pronounced Krees-Toe-Bahl, kind of like Crystal Ball). Cristobal is a weak tropical storm with winds at 45 mph. Cristobal will skirt the outerbanks of the Carolinas as it tracks northeast. Bertha will jet quickly northeast and weaken over the co... So it has been a busy week for the Webb family. I flew in to Seattle on Saturday and had some time with family and friends on Saturday and Sunday. It was very nice but also pretty sad to say goodbye to our people up here. My wife and I are both from the Northwest so you can imagine. The worst was when we had to say goodbye to our daughter #1 on Sunday. She is the one who has given us our the two little grandsons, and they live on the East... Orange Air Quality Alerts were in effect Wednesday and will be again for Thursday. What does this mean? During the afternoon the heat and sunshine begin to cook the pollutants in the air, and create surface Ozone. This can be unhealthy for breathing at high levels. Thursday afternoon the Air Quality Index will likely go above 100, which can be unhealthy for sensative groups, especially children, older adults, and others with respiratory pr... Ok, so the weather is really heating up over Kentuckiana as we head further through July. This made me ponder the whole global warming issue, but in a different light. I know this is a hot topic, pardon the pun, and I'm not going to dig into it, or dig myself a hole while diggin into it. Global warming is a serious concern for many folks, but sometimes it can be funny. It's funny how you can blame just about everything on global warming. ... Hey, what happened to all the cool air and rain? We are now about 1 inch behind in terms of rainfall totals for the month. I wouldn't call that extreme, but the area yards are beginning to turn a bit crispy! The highs in the mid 90s aren't helping either. So grab the hoses or face some withering foliage. We are still over 7 inches ahead for the year thanks to a very rainy Spring. Isolated showers make a weak return by the weekend. ...Remember back in January and February when it was so cold, for so long. I found myself longing for a nice, hot summer day. This ain't it! I prefer the nice mid 80s with dry air, but hey, you can't always get what you want. Especially with the weather. We are going to get into the hazy and hot summer pattern over the next few days. We aren't seeing and cold fronts on the horizon either. So sit back and relax. Summer is back! ...So, I hope you got some rain recently, because we are saying, "bye-bye" to the rainfall over the next week. Not only will it be dry, but it's going to get really hot too. We're looking at highs around 93 or 94 Wednesday through Friday, with low 90s through the upcoming weekend. But, hey, that's July! Sounds like it's time for some good ol' ice cream! July is officially ice cream month. In case you didn't know...In 1984, Presiden... Showers and Thunderstorms will be developing this evening ahead of a cold front. A few storms could be severe with damaging winds, heavy rain, lightning, and small hail. Another round of storms will likely come through late tonight and early Sunday morning as the actual cold front moves south through Kentuckiana. The Storm Prediction Center has areas generally north of the Ohio River in a Slight Risk for severe weather tonight...<... There are an aweful lot of things going on this weekend, so be careful as another cold front moves through late Saturday and early Sunday. The fact that it should be moving through during the overnight is a very good thing. Fronts this time of the can really kick things up quick. I'm really hoping for a quiet weekend, but you can bet all have the weather radio nearby with WHAS11.com up on the computer! ...Here is the current location of Hurricane Bertha as of Monday 11:00 pm EDT... THE EYE OF HURRICANE BERTHA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 20.8 NORTH...LONGITUDE 52.8 WEST OR ABOUT 695 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS AND ABOUT 1085 MILES SOUTHEAST OF BERMUDA. >> Continue reading: Hurricane Bertha... Deja Vu It wasn't the greatest weather down at the Waterfront, but it was much better than the last two years! At least the 90 degree heat was kept at bay. Looks pretty busy over the next few days. A front will be here by Wednesday with some stronger storms possible. We aren't even in the slight risk range, yet, but thunderstorms this time of the year like to get frisky during the max heating of the day. I'll keep you updated! ...
The second tropical storm of the season "Bertha" is gaining strength in the central Atlantic Ocean with winds sustained at 60 mph. Those winds will need to increase by about 14 mph, to 74 mph for the storm to becom... Ok, so it's July, we're heading closer to mid-summer, and it's going to get hotter. Breaking news right! :). Well, in order to not be Captain Obvious, I do have a few "hot" July facts for you. Right now through July 22nd, our average high is 87. The mercury bumps up a degree on the 23rd to 88 degrees for the average. 88 degrees is the average high through the 26th. So, at the end of July there is a four day period where our aver... It was my first Fourth of July in Louisville, and all I have to say is, this town can party! It was also my first time being on center stage in front of thousands of poeple at the Fifth/Third Bank Waterfront Independence Festival. Monty, Jamie, and myself helped introduce some of the bands Thursday and Friday. I also have to say, it can be a little intimidating getting up on that stage. It's funny, I used to want to be a rock star... Hey, it's almost time to pack up the friends and family and head down to the Fifth Third Bank Waterfront Independence Day Festival! The team was out there yesterday and it was great. By the time the fireworks started, the crowd was all the way back to 64. That is always an impressive site! Hope to see you there! ...I've been hearing a lot of complaining from my co-workers about my 4th of July forecast... Showers/Thunderstorms and a high of 82 (like I have any control over the weather). So how does this forecast compare to the past five years? Here are the stats... - 2007... High: 90, Low: 72, Rain: 0.11", Showers/Thunderstorms Oh, if only we could keep the weather from the last few days! Rain and storms are returning to the area as we speak in the form of an area of low pressure and a cold front. Everything is converging on us just in time for the holiday. Our storm chances ramp up to a 40-50% chance and continue through the 4th. Pockets of heavy rain and storms will be most likely during the max heating of the days. Stay tuned! ...Not a bad weather set up for our Wednesday across the area. Hey, at least we are one day closer to Independence Day! Our weather is still pretty nice even though the heat has been turned up on us. We will see highs near 90 with a slight increase in the humidity levels. We will stay dry with no showers expected. That won't be the case on Thursday or Friday. We are watching for a front to push in starting on Thursday and then stalling over... |
