Line Of Storms Tonight, More Saturday

7:51 PM Fri, Jun 27, 2008 |

A line of strong thunderstorms with a history of damaging winds and hail is moving closer to Kentuckiana tonight. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been in effect for areas in southern Indiana and western Kentucky. This will be moving quickly east as the night progresses and the storms move closer. This line is associated with what we call a "vort max", basically a wave in the middle levels of the atmoshpere. This vort is a strong kicker, helping to lift up the unstable air and create these storms.

Tomorrow, it's a different story. We'll have cold front at the surface to do the the heavy lifting and storm producing. With an unstable atmosphere still in place, damaging winds and hail will again be possible. Storms could be more widespread on Saturday and produce heavier rainfall. 1-3" rainfall totals are possible by Sunday morning.

After all this mess though, next week looks like a beauty!

As expected the watch has been extended east for all of Kentuckiana through 2am...
