Concerning the potential for severe weather...

11:41 PM Wed, Apr 09, 2008 |

(Question from viewer, Anthony)

I was watching the whas11.com first alert forcast and I noticed on the futurecast there is gonna be some showers and some storms on the 10:30 mark and then i looked at the the 3:30 4:30 timeline and i noticed something in my head...don't ya think that maybe those storms will weaken a lil bit as they come by due to the storms that are predicted at around 10:30? or will it just be the system overall?

If you can answer this question or bring it up around the 10 pm newscast or the 11 o clock newscast it may change what the forecast is or something

I aint Professional at this but i watch alot of weather channel and you guys along with the other 3 local news and i try to learn alot from those cause i want to try to get in the weather field whenever i get into college.

so yeah that my thought on the situation for the 10:30 thursday night storm and how it will effect the storm after that.

These are very good questions Anthony. Yes the first system will likely have an effect on the second one, and the second one will have an effect on the third, due to arrive early Friday afternoon.

At this time, I am most concerned about the first one and the one early Friday afternoon if it develops. The first one looks to develop along a prefrontal trough and comes through with the best instability (heating and moisture). The earlier this line reaches us, the more severe it is likely to be since it will benefit from more heating. I'm less concerned about the second batch of showers, due to arrive early Friday morning. This disturbance will not have the benefit of much heating and will likely be robbed of some of the moisture from the previous squall line. Lastly, if we are able to get some sunshine in here Friday morning or very early afternoon, then along the cold front itself I would expect a narrow but possibly intense line of storms to develop. This one would be capable of some large hail and damaging winds. That is if, we get some heating.

Moral of the story, we need to be on our toes late Thursday and into early Friday afternoon.

Stay tuned and keep studying the weather!

I just want to say I am very sorry to see Jeremy Kappell leave and Ken Schulz retire.
I am one of those people who is very scared of storms.
Of all the weatherpeople in this area these two are the only ones I can listen to. Their voices never seem to have that tone of doom. They are very calm, don't seem to get hyper as the storms get worse. I have at times had to get in my closet, but I could keep the TV on and listen to them.
