We can gripe about the cold just not too loudly.

7:37 PM Fri, Jan 18, 2008 |

I know this won’t warm you up but, it can and has been worse. In fact when it comes to bitterly cold winter weather, Mother Nature has been rather gentle with us for the last few years.

I did a little research and was surprised to find that the last time we hit zero degree in Louisville was Christmas morning 2004 and the last time we went below zero (-5) was the end of January 2004, four years ago. Even still, that pales in comparison to the 16 and 22 degree below zero temperatures we recorded after the big snowstorm of 1994. And, speaking of big snowstorms, we have to go back to right before Christmas 2004 since we’ve had one of those. Feeling warmer yet?

OK, how about this. We are statistically through the coldest part of winter. Let me repeat that. Statistically speaking, we are beginning to warm up. Our lowest average temperatures occur from January 13th through the 17th after which our average temperatures start to warm. We are also seeing about 20 minute more daylight now than we did on January 1.

Well I tried to bring warming thoughts but here’s what you need to know on our current weather situation. Even thought this is the coldest and most prolonged cold spell we have had this winter, there will be no record lows set. We would have to see temperatures fall well below zero to even tie record lows this time of the year. Also, by early in the week of the 28th we could see temperatures rebounding in to the low 50’s. Next, no big snowstorm is looming as of this writing. We could see a little light rain or snow on Tuesday, January 22 and possibly a little, light, accumulating snow on Thursday, January 24. I still am looking at conditions by the first day or two of February that may be more exciting to snow lovers.

Bottom line is that winter has a long way to go. Stay informed and prepared.
