A return to winter

January, of course, is known for its cold and snow. Now following an unseasonably mild and stormy week last week, this week, January will be living up to its name...

The upper level wind pattern that brought the 70 degree temperatures and the heavy rain and thunderstorms here last week has now shifted and a much colder one appears to be taking its place. A large upper level trough of low pressure is now building across much of the eastern US and will translate to markedly colder conditions.

Temperatures look to remain at or below freezing for the vast majority of the coming week. In fact, temperatures look to only reach the low to mid 30’s here today and tomorrow with a chance of snow showers or flurries both days. Following a brief break in the cold on Wednesday, another shot of Arctic air appears to be on the way for the end of the week.

A strong cold front due to arrive on Thursday will push temperatures well below normal for the rest of the week. Highs will only reach the lower 30’s on Thursday and might not break 30 by Friday. The weekend looks even colder with highs not escaping the 20’s! Expect low temperatures to fall way down into the teens! Brrr!!!

In addition to the cold, we are also tracking a couple snow opportunities. The first and maybe the best will arrive on Thursday with the passage of the Arctic cold front. Also, a clipper system may bring some snow showers on Friday and into Friday night. Welcome back to winter Kentuckiana!
