Clash of the Seasons

We all know that springtime is severe weather season. But did you know that we are now entering the secondary peak of severe weather here in Kentuckiana?

Although severe weather can happen at any time of the year, it is most often associated with the springtime, particularly during the months of April, May and early June. It is during this time of the year that a volatile mixture of ingredients comes together to produce those big boomers. These ingredients include an active jet stream, strong solar heating and a clash between warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cold, dry air from Canada.

The springtime, however, isn’t the only time of the year when these ingredients come together though. “The clash of the seasons” also happens during the fall, particularly during the second half of October and into November. It is also this time of the year that the jet stream becomes more active and heating from the sun is still fairly strong.

Right on the climatological cue, Mother Nature looks to bring these ingredients together over the next couple of days and severe weather may be the result. As the high altitude jet stream winds pick up speed, an area of low pressure will start to develop in the plains on Wednesday. This storm system will pull warm and moist air up from the Gulf and cold dry air down from Canada creating strong to severe storms across much of the Central and Eastern United States.

The storm will intensify on Thursday and could cause a major outbreak of severe weather including the possibility of damaging winds, large hail and even tornadoes. Stay tuned…
