Winds of change

I was getting really tired of writing about the relentless heat and humidity that’s been plaguing Kentuckiana over the last couple of months. But finally, the winds of change have arrived.

It was just last week that the mercury was still reaching the upper 90’s! However, a series of cold fronts over the last week has brought some much deserved relief to the area.

Last Tuesday, September 5, the high temperature reached 99 degrees. The passage of a cold front that Wednesday’s brought the high down to 91. Temperatures remained in the low 90’s through last Friday. The arrival of a second, more powerful, front on Saturday brought the mercury down even further with a high of only 84 and maybe more importantly, brought some beneficial rains to the area as well… about a half inch officially at the airport.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, yet another front knocked the temperature down to 79 degrees for a high on Tuesday, which marked the first below normal high temperature we’ve seen since late July! Ordinarily, temperatures like these wouldn’t be such a big deal during the month of September, but after enduring The 2007 Heat Wave, it is like we struck the lottery.

September is often the turning point after a long hot summer. As the sun’s angle continues to get lower in the sky, the frequency and strength of these cold fronts will continue to increase. It doesn’t mean that we won’t see a few more hot days before winter arrives, but we are definitely moving in the right direction. The good news is that more cool weather appears to be on the way for the weekend.
