Is summer winding down or is it over?

You will get no argument from me if you point to the calendar and say that summer continues into the third week of September. You of course are correct.

However, I do not want an argument from you when I say summer ended August 31st. I of course am also correct. In meteorology we consider the three warmest months (June, July and August) as being the summer months. Since I am a meteorologist, I am inclined to believe that we are now into autumn. Having said that, the next question is when will it start to feel like autumn?

Let’s at least get back to normal. With temperatures starting off September running 10 to 15 degrees above normal, it would be an accomplishment just to see these values return to normal. This may happen over the next week. A cold front will be approaching us on Saturday, September 8, then move slowly through the area on Sunday. This will result in an increasing chance for some much needed rain this weekend, especially on Sunday, September 9. Also, with a slow moving front, there will likely be an extended period of cloud cover resulting in lower temperatures by the end of the weekend.

Cold enough to say it’s a taste of fall? That may be a little premature but we could see temperatures topping out only around 80 by Monday, September 10.

Comments

Forgive me Debra for taking all this time to answer your comment. Actually, I hope you are wrong. I for one like the quieter winters. But here's a little bit of information I'll share with you. There has been no correlation found between a hot, dry summer and a cold, wet winter and I hope it stays that way for at least one more winter.

I think we are going to have a bad winter this year because we had a really bad summer, plus we had 8" behind on rain so that calls for bad snowfall. The less rain in the summer the more snow in the winter. So get ready here comes winter.
