Sports: July 2008 ArchivesI found some info on some former Cards in NFL training camps. Here's a great story about former UofL wide receiver Harry Douglas standing up to a veteran on the first day of Falcons camp. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/falcons/stories/2008/07/28/falcons_camp_fight.html And it sounds like Michael Bush may finally be healty for the Oakland Raiders. This is from the San Francisco Chronicle:
Before even coaching a single game at IU, new Hoosiers basketball coach Tom Crean has been given a two year extension. The Indianapolis Star is reporting the deal would run through the 2017-2018 season. In a statement emailed to me Crean says, "As soon as the long form contract is finished it will be released. To date, I am comfortable with the progress that is being made with finalizing the details of my contract and look forward to its comp... Below is the link to home video of Thursday's incident at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Tony Stewart owns a USAC team, and after one of his cars wrecked, Tony didn't like the way things were being handled. He confronts some of the race officials and ends up pushing one and knocking his headset off. Then Tony gave a hard shove to another official. The video was shot by a fan, who gave it to the NBC affiliate in Indianapolis, WTHR. I found this iro... Today when I checked the Associated Press sports wire, I expected to see a story on Brett Favre, the Brickyard 400, maybe some baseball news, but not what you'll see below. When I worked at a tv station in Knoxville, Bob Rainey covered sports in Nashville. We would always run into each other while covering University of Tennessee football and basketball. We became friends, and we kept in touch after both leaving Tennessee. So of you may re...
Here's what Rich Brooks had to say at Thursday's Press Conference hyping up the Kentucky-Louisville game. This is courtesy of the UK Sports Information Department. Enjoy! Opening statement...
On Tuesday news broke Cards head coach Rick Pitino would welcome big man Derrick Caracter back on the team for the 2009-2010 season if he met certain conditions. I applaud the coach for this decision. It's not like Caracter has broken any laws or anything like that. He's been immature. And based on the statement Pitino released Tuesday night, the coach is going to proceed with caution when it comes to DC. That's the right move. Let DC prove he... I just spent about an hour arguing with some of my coworkers on the merits of now former CBS college basketball analyst, Billy Packer. If you haven't heard Packer and CBS parted way Monday ending a 27 year relationship. Packer has been a part of college basketball longer than I've been alive. He's called every Final Four since 1975, the year I was born. I just sort of got used to hearing his voice on the air. Now Clark Kellog will take his pla... Growing up in Philadelphia I had no choice but to become a huge basketball fan. I grew up in Philly during the heyday of Philly hoops. Dr. J and Moses Malone leading the Sixers to the city's last pro sports title way back in 1983. Andrew "The Boston Strangler" Toney ripping the hearts out of Celtics fans. Even "Sir Charles" Barkley rumbling down the court in those tight shorts from yesteryear. On the college level it was Lionel "L-Trai... I thought I'd give you a little "behind the scenes" of how we sometimes do interviews with big sports stars through the magic of satellite. Today I talked with 4-time NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon. He was in Indianapolis; I was at the WHAS11 studios. Jeff was in Indianapolis to help drum up publicity for the Brickyard 400 coming up July 27th. Along with doing interviews with local reporters in Indy, the Speedway put together what's called ... ESPN is filling some airtime this summer with a "competition" trying to determine which USA city is Titletown http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/titletown/index Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe seems to have had enough with the bad publicity surrounding his program. Just in the last week JaJuan Spillman was arrested, and wide receiver Trent Guy was shot in the back while leaving a downtown nightclub. Kragthorpe took the correct move in kicking Spillman off the team. He's been very supportive of Guy. But these two latest incidents seem to part of a bigger problem. On Monday Coach Krag... Maybe Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe does listen to my unsolicited advice. In a blog on Saturday I called on Kragthorpe to get rid of JaJuan Spillman. On Thursday Spillman was arrested for the second time in less than a year and a half. The charges include driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, and carrying a concealed weapon. Apparently coach Kragthorpe felt the same way I did. He dismissed the junior wide r... From everything I know about Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe, he seems to be a nice guy. He seems to be a family man. A man who is deeply religious. A man who you can trust to make the right decision. In the Jajuan Spillman case the right decision is to give him his walking papers. Kick him off the team. If you aren't aware of Spillman's latest transgressions let me give you a quick synopsis. Early Thursday morning the Unive... Another July 4th and another chance for the most ridiculus, grotesque, down right stupid "sporting event" on the calendar. The Coney Island hot dog eating contest. Why do we care about this? Sure the first few years it was a novelty. But now enough is enough. In this world, where so many kids go to bed hungry and die of starvation, how can we spotlight such a wasteful display. And how about the obesity crisis in this country? Great way to show... Listen I have no problem with Brett Favre. He was a great quarterback. Not the best ever, but one of the best. But the love-fest with this guy is over the top. Enough already. Is he retired? Is he coming back? Who cares? It's not worthy of talking about it every day. Favre needs to come out and set the record straight. It's not fair to the Packers who have made plans to move forward with Aaron Rodgers as the new starter. Maybe they wo... Just got back from the Madison Regatta, it was a rainy, overcast day, which actually made it quite comfortable to be out there. If you never seen these boats race, I highly recommend it. We are taking about 200 MPH on the WATER! That's crazy, I get dizzy on a paddle boat, and these guys are going 200 with waves. I asked one of the drivers, who could make the easier transition? The hydroplane guys getting in a stock car or a NASCAR driv... |
