Have my feelings changed towards the Cards?

2:18 PM Tue, Dec 02, 2008 |

I posted a blog not too long ago talking about how great this UofL basketball team was and how loaded with talent it was and how this year was their best chance in a long while to cut the nets down in early April.

Through 2 games everything was going according to plan. Then the dreaded Western Kentucky game took place and I have received questions on whether or not I am still keeping my seat aboard the bandwagon.

My answer is o...

HSGametime Playoff Preview: Semifinals

9:39 AM Mon, Dec 01, 2008 |

We now have just 24 teams still playing football in the state of Kentucky, with 5 local teams still alive. Let's take a look at each game locally:

Union County at Central (3A): I thought Central would lose to ETown last week due to a lack of offense, but the Yellowjackets proved me wrong by putting up an impressive 42-21 victory. They are now just 2 wins away from defending their state title. This week they get another home game aga...

The BCS is BS. Here's How to Fix It.

10:22 PM Sun, Nov 30, 2008 |

So me and a couple of the fellas at work were discussing the merits of the BCS and why college football needs a playoff. If there's one year where a playoff is desperately needed it's this one. Here are the current BCS Standings:

1. Alabama 12-0
2. Oklahoma 11-1
3. Texas 11-1
4. Florida 11-1
5. USC 10-1
6. Utah 12-0
7. Texas Tech 11-1
8. Penn State 11-1
9. Boise State 12-0
10. Ohio ...

Cards and Cats Have Room For Improvement

10:15 PM Sun, Nov 30, 2008 |

After watching a weekend full of college basketball games there's only one thing I can say about where the Cards and Cats stand: they both have a lot of room for improvement.

Let's start with Louisville, which was ranked third in the country going into Sunday's game against Western Kentucky University. But the Cards didn't look like one of the top teams in the country. The Toppers controlled the tempo, out hustled the higher ranked tea...

Million Dollar Loss

9:35 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

This is a wild story. We noticed on espn.com Saturday night a story about their Streak For The Cash Contest. It said a man from Louisville was one win away from winning a $1 Million Dollars. Jordan Fulkerson is a freshman at UofL. He had made 24 picks in a row. One more correct selection and he wins a million bucks. I talked to his dad in Bowling Green Saturday night. He said Jordan was keeping quiet as to what his final pick would be. He said...

Another Game, Another Loss for the Cards

1:17 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

The Louisville football team is starting to resemble a broken record. Play hard for a half, make some dumb mistakes, get behind big and then lose. The latest debacle occurred Saturday against the West Virginia Mountaineers. A game they lost 35-21, giving them four straight L's.

Sitting at 5-5 all the Cards needed to do was win this game to become bowl eligible. Send the seniors out in their last home game with a win. Instead they resem...

Troubling Signs For The Cards

6:52 PM Wed, Nov 19, 2008 |

UPDATE:I had a chance to talk to Athletic Director Tom Jurich this afternoon about the state of the football program. Some tough questions were asked. Here in a nutshell is what Jurich had to say.

  1. Coach Kragthorpe will return as head coach next season no matter how the team finishes this year. He says as long as Kragthorpe wants to return next season, the job is his.
  2. He wants to fans to have patience...

93.9 The Ticket closing an injustice to staff and listeners

4:46 PM Wed, Nov 19, 2008 |

On Monday, the 5 local shows on 93.9 The Ticket, the local ESPN affiliate in Louisville, we loaded with calls about the previous weekends games, most notably, the UK loss to VMI on Friday.

93.9 The Ticket Switching Formats

5:00 PM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |

The future of local sports talk radio in Louisville took a major hit Tuesday afternoon when it was announced 93.9 the ticket is switching to a classic rock channel. That means the end of shows like "Dave and Scott in the Morning", and "The Front Row Ticket with Rick Bozich and Big EZ ". General Manager Dugan Ryan tells me John "The Freak" Renshaw's show and possibly the "Bob and Will" show will move to 1450am. That station will be the new home...

Good football, bad behavior at Fairdale

11:27 PM Sat, Nov 15, 2008 |

Fairdale and Marion County played one of the more competitive playoff games in the area Friday night. Marion County jumped ahead by two touchdowns, but Fairdale came back to tie the game at 21 in the 4th quarter. Bulldogs receiver Quintrell Morris had a great game. 2 touchdown catches and a kickoff return for another score. But Marion County buckled down in the final 10 minutes with two touchdowns and they got the big road win 35-21.

A...

Notes From IU Basketball's Season Opener

8:56 PM Sat, Nov 15, 2008 |

Sitting in Assembly Hall with a birds eye view of the Hoosiers season opener against Northwestern State it's pretty obvious IU will go through some growing pains this season. New head coach Tom Crean has 13 news players on the roster, and getting everyone on the same page will take time. They have some talent in Verdell Jones and Devan Dumes but the problem is it's not enough. But while this isn't the most talented group of Hoosiers ever, Crea...

Notes From Coach Kragthorpe's Press Conference

3:18 PM Mon, Nov 10, 2008 |

Monday University of Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe met with the media to discuss the Cards 41-7 beat down at the hands of Pitt and the upcoming game against Cincinnati. Here are a few of the key points he talked about.

1. Hunter Cantwell will remain the starter at quarterback. Despite Matt Simms getting in a few series against Pittsburgh, Kragthorpe thinks Cantwell still gives the Cards the best shot at winning.

2....

Cobb Should See All The Snaps At QB

8:49 PM Sat, Nov 08, 2008 |

If Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks had any thought of using Mike Hartline for a series or two at quarterback he should fuhggettaboutit. Freshman Randall Cobb proved he's the man to lead the Cats offense. Saturday against Georgia Cobb rushed for more than a hundreds yards and threw for more than a hundred. Even though the Cats lost, the fact the offense put up 38 points is reason enough to be encouraged. Cobb engineered six scoring drives, ...

Proud To Be From Philly

6:32 PM Mon, Nov 03, 2008 |

I've always been proud to be from Philadelphia. The cheesesteaks. The Liberty Bell. South St. Olde City. All things that made me proud to be a Philadelphian. But when it comes to sports there really hasn't been much to cheer about in Philly in recent years. The last major sports title the city won was in 1983 when the Sixers beat the Lakers. Sure we came close a few times. The Phillies losing to the Blue Jays in the 1993 Series. The Sixers los...

The Cards are No. 3!

5:24 PM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

The ESPN/USA Today Preseason College Basketball Poll was released on Thursday and UofL found themselves near the top at number 3. Only North Carolina and UConn are ahead of the Cards.
What does the ranking mean? Since they haven't played anyone but themselves yet, not alot. Many times the preseason rankings will get fans all pumped up about their team only to leave them disappointed come March.
That will not happen this time.
...

UofL Receiver Long Out for the Season

4:49 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |

The Louisville football team received a devastating blow Monday night when junior wide receiver Scott Long injured his knee in practice. He's out for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Here's the full release from UofL:

University of Louisville junior wide receiver Scott Long tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee in practice on Tuesday and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. He w...

Hartline Throws Teammates Under The Bus

9:29 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

I'm a big Mike Hartline fan. I think the UK quarterback is smart and honest. But sometimes honesty can get you in trouble. On Monday Cats head coach Rich Brooks benched Hartline for the Mississippi State game in favor of freshman Randall Cobb. Instead of grinning and bearing it Hartline spoke his mind and now fans and some of the media are crucifying him for it.

Here's what Hartline said. When asked about his benching he replied, "I'm ...

Former UK Player, Current Ref Takes Out Player

10:31 PM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |

One of the most bizarre things ever on a football field took place during Saturday's LSU-South Carolina game. If you haven't seen it or heard about it I'll do my best to describe what happened.

In the second quarter the Gamecocks had the ball in the red zone looking to score. Quarterback Stephen Garcia scrambles to his right only to collide with umpire Wilbur Hackett Jr. In the video it looks like Hackett Jr. braces for the collision a...

Must Win For The Cards

9:00 PM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

Friday's game against Memphis is a must win for the Louisville Cardinals and here are five reasons why.

1. A loss would drop them to 2-3 on the season with back to back losses. Plus they still have the toughest part of their schedule still ahead. While the game is on the road, the Cards can't afford to lose this one.

2. If they want to prove the program has made some progress from year one of Kragthorpe to year two, these are t...

Major League Baseball's Love Affair With Chicago

2:22 PM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |

Chicago is a great city. It's one of my top 10 cities in the entire world. Every time I go to Chicago I have a blast. The Magnificent Mile is always thriving. Everyone should experience Wrigleyville once. Some of my favorite rappers (Common, Kanye West, Rhymefest) hail from Chicago. With that said I'm getting tired of Major League Baseball's obsession with its two Chicago teams.

Here's what has me upset. Back in September ...
