Gasol has to be called for goaltending

Those who are blaming Courtney Lee for missing the shot at the end of regulation in Game 2 (Kyle Draper) need to look no further than Pau Gasol getting caught in the rim. That is a goaltend. Whistle blows, basket counts, game over, series tied at 1 game a piece.

I will say that Lee had a good look at the basket, he just missed the shot. But a goaltend is a goaltend.

The NBA's rule #11 is the rule on goaltending. It states that a player shall not "touch the ball or the basket ring when the ball is using the basket ring as its lower base."

Gasol touched the rim, or "basket ring", while the ball was up there. That is goaltending.

The refs swallowed their whistles while the ball was being thrown in. Kobe Bryant mugged Lee as he tried to come off the screen. There really isn't much beef about that, you don't expect the officials to call a foul on one of the faces of the league in that situation at home. But you don't expect the refs to miss a 7-footer's hand in the net and on the rim as a shot goes begging off the front of the iron.

Lee's shot should've counted. All the media and fans who are calling for him to pack up and head for European ball need to watch the replay again.
