Just got back from the Madison Regatta, it was a rainy, overcast day, which actually made it quite comfortable to be out there. If you never seen these boats race, I highly recommend it. We are taking about 200 MPH on the WATER! That's crazy, I get dizzy on a paddle boat, and these guys are going 200 with waves. I asked one of the drivers, who could make the easier transition? The hydroplane guys getting in a stock car or a NASCAR driver trying to steer one of these boats. He said the boats have no brakes and and NASCAR guys would find it a whole new world. The Madison Regatta has a lot of things that make it unique. First off, the small town feel. These boats race in Detroit, Seattle and San Diego. So coming to tiny Madison is a throwback to the good old days. This race has been going for for 58 years, and it seems like the whole town gets behind it. We drove down mainstreet before tonight's parade, and hundreds had already put there chairs down on the sidewalk to get a good seat. It's also a very fan friendly event, the pits are open at times for the fans to get up close. And the drivers are very accessable. The Oh Boy! Oberto Miss Madison boat is, as always, the fan favorite in Madison. It's owned by the city of Madison. That means the 13,000 residents get to feel like that have a stake in the boat. It's hard to believe, Miss Madison has only one the Madison Regatta twice. 1971 and 2001. It was such a compelling story back in '71, they made a movie about it. Rememeber, it was called Madison and came out in 2001. We will have coverage Saturday and Sunday from the races on WHAS11. So tune and and see who wins the Governor's Cup! I'd also love to hear about anyone's experience at the Madison Regatta. Leave those comments. |
