Please Mr. Favre, enjoy retirement

8:50 AM Thu, Jul 03, 2008 |

By Kyle Brown

The rumor mill is churning out more 'Brett Favre wants to return' headlines. ESPN had wall-to-wall coverage on it on Wednesday (and I'm sure it will dominate for the upcoming week). Brett has denied these reports saying that it is ONLY A RUMOR. Regardless of whether its rumor or truth I am begging Brett to stay away.

Brett Favre is a sure-shot Hall of Famer. There is no arguing that. He is an NFL ICON and has given sports fans like myself moment after moment of unforgettable play. From the kid-like way he plays the game and jokes with teammates on-field, to the Monday night following his father's death that made everyone a Packers fan for a night no matter who you cheer for. To the 82 yard bomb he delivered in overtime to beat the Denver Broncos this past season. Brett Favre's legacy on the game will never be forgotten.

But it is Aaron Rodgers' time now.

Green Bay used a 1st Round pick on the kid from Cal. He has waited patiently for his turn under center. He has absorbed all sorts of Favre-ucation and has had a chance to study under the master for a few seasons. His time is now.

Rodgers has had very few chances to showcase the talent that made him a top pick and that put his Cal Bears in the top 25 in his time there.

From Favre's tear-filled retirement speech, Rodgers has been groomed to take the snaps on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field. But Brett REPORTEDLY wants to come back and kill the momentum Rodgers has built in the off-season and throughout the OTA's.

So, Mr. Favre, if you care as much about the Green Bay Packers as you seem to, let them move on. Let them change their face and advance as NFC contenders with young-blood leading the way. All a return would do is set the team back years. Rodgers would not be happy with going back to second string now and would most-likely want out. That puts Brian Brohm as the back-up. And when you retire at the end of next season the rebuilding and rebranding begins again.

Brett, thank you for all of the memories you have given us throughout the years. The Packers will never be able to fully replace you. But at least give them a chance to try.
