Another July 4th and another chance for the most ridiculus, grotesque, down right stupid "sporting event" on the calendar. The Coney Island hot dog eating contest. Why do we care about this? Sure the first few years it was a novelty. But now enough is enough. In this world, where so many kids go to bed hungry and die of starvation, how can we spotlight such a wasteful display. And how about the obesity crisis in this country? Great way to show kids healthy eating habits.

Listen, I'm not a total party pooper. I don't mind an eating contest at the county fair, where some average joe's throw back some watermelon or chicken wings. But do we really need an official competive eating league? I'm not kidding. There is something called the MLE - Major League Eating. Check out their web site majorleagueeating.com, and send them e-mails telling them to disband. There's also something called the International Federation of Eating. International Federation??? The polar ice caps are melting, but we have to have an International Federation of Eating!

Well, that's enough of my rant. Writing this has made me hungry. I think I'll go put back a couple dozen hot dogs.
