Losing A Friend

7:15 PM Sat, Jul 26, 2008 |

Today when I checked the Associated Press sports wire, I expected to see a story on Brett Favre, the Brickyard 400, maybe some baseball news, but not what you'll see below. When I worked at a tv station in Knoxville, Bob Rainey covered sports in Nashville. We would always run into each other while covering University of Tennessee football and basketball. We became friends, and we kept in touch after both leaving Tennessee. So of you may remember him from his time at WDRB. I had no idea he was sick, and I'm deeply saddned to read this news.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- WCCO-TV sports reporter and weekend anchor Bob Rainey died Saturday after a battle with colon cancer. He was 46.
Rainey spent more than 20 years as a sportscaster working in his hometown of Rochester, N.Y. and later Kentucky, Philadelphia, and Nashville, Tenn. before landing in Minnesota in 2004.
WCCO-TV reported on its Web site that Rainey was a lifelong Vikings fan who often said he had to pinch himself knowing he was covering his favorite team. Rainey had wanted to be a sportscaster since he was a child.
In a note to WCCO employees, the station's vice president and general manager, Susan Adams Loyd, described him as a soft-spoken man who often had a kind or funny thing to share with others.
