Kragthorpe Needs To Come Down Hard On Spillman

9:51 PM Sat, Jul 05, 2008 |

From everything I know about Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe, he seems to be a nice guy. He seems to be a family man. A man who is deeply religious. A man who you can trust to make the right decision. In the Jajuan Spillman case the right decision is to give him his walking papers. Kick him off the team.

If you aren't aware of Spillman's latest transgressions let me give you a quick synopsis. Early Thursday morning the University of Louisville wide receiver was arrested for driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon. The gun was loaded at the time. It's his second arrest in the last 18 months. Back in January of 2007 he was arrested for DUI and marijuana possession. The marijuana charge was recently dropped, but Spillman still plead guilty to DUI and was ordered to pay a fine and attend counseling. You would think he would have at least missed a couple of games at the beginning of last season. But no, coach Kragthorpe gave him a slap on the wrist saying the punishment was handled in-house. After last season's game against NC State Spillman was suspended indefinitely, although Kragthorpe did not give any reason for the suspension.

But if these latest charges are proven to be true Kragthorpe has to hand down some heavy discipline. I'm all for giving second chances. Spillman is a young man and we've all made mistakes when we were young. I'm sure Spillman will eventually get his act together but if the charges are true he needs to pay the price. Kragthorpe has been cleaning out bad apples in the program since he got to Louisville. No need to stop now. If Spillman is allowed to remain on the team, without having learned his lesson, what message does that send to the other players? You can do whatever you want and coach will still welcome you back? That's not the message Kragthorpe needs to be sending right now.

That's why I say get rid of Spillman. Wish him the best. Even be there for him if he needs your help. But until he proves he wants to be on the team and do the things necessary to stay out of the police blotter he should not be allowed anywhere near the team.

Let me know what you think.
