2-Year Extension For Crean

4:27 PM Mon, Jul 28, 2008 |

Before even coaching a single game at IU, new Hoosiers basketball coach Tom Crean has been given a two year extension. The Indianapolis Star is reporting the deal would run through the 2017-2018 season. In a statement emailed to me Crean says, "As soon as the long form contract is finished it will be released. To date, I am comfortable with the progress that is being made with finalizing the details of my contract and look forward to its completion."

This move shows us two things about the state of the Indiana basketball program. (1) It's in bad shape and the higher-ups know it. With only one returning scholarship player it will take years for Crean to turn it around. Add in the possible sanctions from the NCAA for violations committed during the Kelvin Sampson era and it's obvious fans and administrators will have to be patient with Crean. (2) Indiana University President Michael McRobbie believes Crean is the right coach to return the Hoosiers to prominence. Why give him an extension when you've already locked him up for 8 years? This shows how much faith you have in him and how much you believe he'll get it done.

Let me know what you think.
