Wildcats Riding High

5:24 PM Tue, Oct 16, 2007 |

What sort of twighlight zone are we in right now? Kentucky just beat #1 LSU, they are 6-1 and ranked 7th in the first BCS Poll of the year. Wow. The Cats are doing things no UK team has done in many years.

They didn't just beat LSU, they beat them up. The Tigers got a lot of pub for having the nation's best defense, but Kentucky took it to them. The Wildcats defense stood tall and boy were they hitting. Cornerback Trevard Lindley really came up especially big including a finger tip tackle that kept LSU from getting a first down late in the game, and that big 4th quarter interception that lead to the game-tying field goal. And Steve Johnson has made himself a lot of money in recent weeks. I would think his NFL stock is rising with all the big plays he keeps making in big games.

Now for the 2nd straight week UK will be on national tv, featured in the SEC's premier game. ESPN's college gameday will broadcast it's show from Lexington. It's a lot to ask for any team to beat LSU and Florida in back-to-back weeks, but if Kentucky can pull it off, they will be legit contenders to reach the SEC Championship game for the first time ever. They way this team is playing, nothing is impossible right now.

First off, I assume you are referring to Wednesday. Due to the severe weather coverage we did not have a sports report on Thursday. You need to realize that we are not just a Louisville television station. We cover a large viewing area that includes the surrounding counties. There are thousands of Kentucky fans in our area, and a good number of Indiana U. fans as well. We do our best to cover everyone. On a day to day basis we must judge which is the biggest story. Last season, when Louisville had it’s best ever football season, the Cards were the lead sports story just about every day. We spent a week in Miami covering the build-up to the Orange Bowl. This season we continue to lead with Louisville-related stories many times. But some days, lets face it UK is the bigger story. They just beat the #1 team in the nation, and on the day you are referring to, their new basketball coach had about 1500 fans turn out (in Louisville) to hear him speak.

I agree, Louisville doesn’t get much pub in Lexington. But that has nothing to do with how we operate here in Louisville. It’s similar to Nashville & Knoxville in Tennessee. The University of Tennessee (like UK) is huge state wide, while Vanderbilt is basically just covered in Nashville. I know this because I worked in Knoxville earlier in my career.

I’m sure if you judge our sportscasts in whole (and not just one day) you will see fair and balanced (sorry Fox News) coverage.

Thanks for watching.
