Week one of the season is in the books, but you know I couldn't let things end without giving my thoughts on how the big three (UofL, UK, and IU) fared. They all played some pretty bad competition so it's no surprise they each won by mammoth margins. Let's start with UofL's 73-10 blasting of Murray State. Boy this was a mismatch. I was at the game and remember thinking they should have only scheduled the Racers for a half. Who wants to see all 60 minutes of that thrashing? The Cards offense proved it shouldn't miss a beat under new head coach Steve Kragthorpe. Heisman hopeful Brian Brohm was precise throwing for 375 yards and four touchdowns. But.....he did have one slip-up. In the first quarter he was under pressure, scrambling to his right. No problem, just throw it away BB. Nope. Brohm chucks it up, and it's nearly picked off. The play was nullified by a penalty, but still a bad decision by Brohm. The defense was good throughout most of the night, but some mental lapses could hurt against better teams. Early on the Racers were able to move the ball on the ground, and through misdirection. I know there's a team in Morgantown that likes to do a lot of misdirection stuff, so the Cards better get a handle on it now. Coach Kragthorpe has to be concerned about the number of penalties the Cards racked up. A total of 10, including several boneheaded personal foul penalties. All in all a solid effort by Planet Red. Their first real test however won't come until September 15th at UK. |
