One of the worst college football programs in the country has undergone a facelift. UK football fans no longer have to hide their Babe Parilli jersey or walk around with their heads down. It's actually cool to be a Kentucky football fan. And a majority of the credit has to go to head coach Rich Brooks. Brooks is just hours away from leading the 'Cats against their rival Louisville. He's 0-4 against the 'Cards, but at one point, that was probably the least of his worries. When he first arrived in Lexington back in 2003, the program was hampered by sanctions, stripped of scholarships and a long way away from recovery. To say Brooks had a difficult job ahead of him is an understatement. Kentucky struggled in his first three seasons winning 4, 2, and 3 games respectively. While most coaches would dodge questions about the teams' shortcomings, Brooks withstood the fire. While people were calling for his head, he never lashed back. He was honest when times were bad. When his team was getting beat by Ohio (16-28) or when they were blown out against Indiana (14-38), Brooks urged the Big Blue Nation to remain patient. Now the fruits of the 'Cats labor is paying off. Kentucky may not match last years win total (8) or even win a bowl game, but the vibe around the program has changed. You can see it in the players. They expect to win games now instead of hoping to win them. There are smiles on their faces during press conferences. When other players deliver scripted quotes, the 'Cats seem to say what's on their mind. Something they probably learned from their coach. Brooks may not be the best coach in the country, but when Kentucky was in the basement he was the right man to lead them out. Let me know what you think. |
