The rivalry lives on. UK's 40-34 win over rival Louisville Saturday night was just what the series needed. A competitve game which came down to the final possession. I've been to a number of games at Commonwealth Stadium, but none compare to this one. It was like a prize fight between two boxers who desperately wanted to win. When Kentucky took the early lead, thanks to two Louisville turnovers you thought this might be the time they snap a four game losing streak to the 'Cards. But the 'Cards showed some heart, coming back to take the lead making it competitive throughout. I thought both teams made some key errors which could have cost them the game. On the Kentucky side, the personal foul penalty on Eric Scott, on their final drive, may have been the most bone-headed play I've ever seen. You have to be focused and keep your emotions in check at that time. But to the 'Cats credit they came back on the next play and scored the winning touchdown on Andre Woodson's 57-yard pass to Steve Johnson. When Johnson scored the touchdown Commonwealth Stadium was a sight to behold. Which brings me to the 'Cards mistakes. How does Johnson get that wide open on such a critical play? If Louisville is supposed to be a national title contender they can't make such a major error on such a critical play. Cornerback Woodny Turenne and Safety Rich Raglin have to communicate better on that play. Overall however it was a great effort by both teams. For Kentucky, it's the kind of win the fans have been wanting for 30 years. Head Coach Rich Brooks and the players deserve it. Now they hope to avoid a Louisville hangover when they play at Arkansas this Saturday. The 'Cards can take solace in knowing they did not give up. They battled back and still had a chance to win at the end. The defense still has to improve and stay focused the entire 60 minutes, but a BCS bowl berth is still within grasp. They try to bounce back Saturday at home against Syracuse. Let me know what you think. |
