The Kentucky Wildcats have the opportunity to prove last season was not a fluke. The 'Cats 2006 schedule was tailor-made for a bowl berth. Let's be honest, when you have Texas State and Louisiana-Monroe on the schedule, you better contend for a bowl game. Kentucky did, finishing 8-5 with a win over Clemson in the Music City Bowl. Mission accomplished. But the mission gets more difficult this season with five of the their 12 opponents finishing the regular season ranked in the BCS top 25 a year ago. But don't fret Big Blue Nation. Kentucky has the weapons to get it done. Quarterback Andre Woodson, running back Rafael Little, and wide receivers Keenan Burton and Dicky Lyons Jr., are some of the best at their respective positions in the country. The 'Cats should be able to score with just about anyone. Offense is not a problem. The defense though, has to hold up its end of the bargain. Last year they ranked next to last in the country in total yards allowed per game. But with another years experience under their belt, and a new defensive coordinator in Steve Brown, Kentucky should be better on that side of the ball (they can't get much worse.) To match last season, or even go further, the 'Cats will have upset a team they haven't beaten in more than two decades. The last time Kentucky beat Florida was 1986, and the last time they beat Tennessee was 1984. The good thing is both teams visit Lexington, so the Wildcats have a chance. One thing is certain: On paper, this is the most talented team Rich Brooks has had at UK. Now the 'Cats have to go out and prove it. Let me know what you think. Kyle Draper |
