The mayoral term limit proposal floated by Democratic Metro Councilman Brent Ackerson is gaining momentum. KY State Rep. Steve Riggs of Louisville wants the Jefferson County delegation and Mayor Jerry Abramson to discuss the idea, but says eventually it should be up to the citizens of Louisville Metro to decide. Here's a news release:
Frankfort - State Rep. Steve Riggs, the long-time chairman of the House of Representatives' Local Government Committee, is encouraging his legislative colleagues in the Jefferson County delegation to begin discussing whether there should be tighter term limits for metro mayor. "With the 2010 Regular Session less than three months away, I am hoping our delegation will take a more formal look at the options, and would appreciate Mayor Abramson's input as well," Rep. Riggs said. "I believe there is considerable merit in letting voters decide this issue. That's how metro government was formed in the first place, and it makes sense to have their input on such a major change." Rep. Riggs noted that if any action is taken on limiting mayoral terms from three to two, it would first require approval by the General Assembly. "If we choose to move forward, my committee will play an integral role in this matter, so the more dialog we have now, the smoother the process will be," he said. "I look forward to hearing all sides on this issue." The legislature's Local Government Committee has jurisdiction over all cities, counties, and special districts in Kentucky.

Incredible....another representative who doesnt want any part of any discussion on term limits. This does not need a city wide vote in Louisville, what we need is state wide term limits for all of our elected leaders. These are the same leaders who wont allow the people across this state to vote on expanded gambling, but when it pertains to even the thought of any type of term limits we need to then turn the power over to the people. 8 years is enough for the KY Senate and the KY House.
