Mongiardo: (We have) significantly reduced Conway's cash advantage from a 3:1 advantage after the 2nd quarter to 2:1 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Conway: We are still the only campaign that can beat the Republicans next year.

Mongiardo: Mongiardo fundraising Up 70%, while Conway suffers 50% decline.

It is, after all, the nature of politics for rivals to look at the exact same facts and come to drastically different conclusions.

In even more news releases from the campaigns late Thursday, the Mongiardo campaign continues to use class warfare language in painting Jack Conway as an elitist, while the Conway campaign continues to take advantage of the Dan Mongiardo tapes, linking to five separate media reports about the controversy in its fundraising news release.

And here are those competing news releases:

Mongiardo:

Mongiardo Closes Fundraising Gap with Conway
Significantly Reduces Conway Cash Advantage
Mongiardo Fundraising Up 70%,
While Conway Suffers 50% Decline

FRANKFORT---Bolstered by his best fundraising quarter of the campaign, Lt. Governor and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Daniel Mongiardo has significantly reduced Attorney General Jack Conway's fundraising advantage in the Kentucky U. S. Senate race.

Mongiardo raised $514,404 in the 3rd quarter, which was a 70% increase over what Mongiardo raised in the 2nd quarter. In contrast, Conway's fundraising has suffered a sharp decline of approximately 50%.

Because Conway has refused to release any details of his report, including how much he actually raised, it is unknown how much if any of his fundraising total for the quarter is his personal loan or contribution. It is also a mystery as to how much he raised in Kentucky v. out-of-state.

Mongiardo significantly reduced Conway's cash advantage from a 3:1 advantage after the 2nd quarter to 2:1 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

"We have always expected Jack Conway, with his support from Washington political insiders and New York and Hollywood elites to out raise us, but we did not expect our fundraising to go up 70% this quarter, while Jack Conway's fundraising dropped almost 50%. Daniel Mongiardo's campaign of Kentuckians, by Kentuckians and for Kentuckians has closed the fundraising gap with Jack Conway and significantly reduced his cash advantage. That is significant," said Kim Geveden, Mongiardo campaign spokesman.

"Daniel thanks grassroots Kentuckians for their support and Daniel will continue to fight for the interests of hard working Kentucky families not those of the silver spoon crowd and political elites whose interests Jack Conway puts first," said Geveden.

Conway:

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway continues to run a first rate U.S. Senate campaign. Our campaign has raised $2 million, doubling our opponent's money, continuing our strong fundraising efforts. Conway's combination of high-powered endorsements, key labor backing, grassroots organization, dedicated financial supporters, and a solid record of accomplishments as Attorney General make him, as the Washington Post said, "the real star in 2010." And thanks to committed supporters like you, we are still the only campaign that can beat the Republicans next year!

Time Magazine: Conway Outperforms Mongiardo

A new Rasmussen survey finds Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway (D) outperforming his Senate primary rival, Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, against their potential general election foes, Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R) and Rand Paul (R).
Grayson, the favored candidate among national GOP leadership, leads Mongiardo by 7 points, but ties with Conway. Paul also leads Mongiardo, though trails Conway by 4 points.
For all the talk of the GOP picking up seats in the midterm elections, this open seat could be one the party has a difficult time holding -- which is perhaps why Grayson picked up a fundraising boost on Capitol Hill last month...

Democratic Senate primary heats up in Kentucky

WASHINGTON (CNN)- Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway announced Thursday that his campaign has raised more than $2 million so far this year for his U.S. Senate bid.
In a statement announcing their numbers, Conway's campaign claimed a two-to-one money advantage over their main Democratic primary opponent -- Kentucky Lt. Governor Dan Mongiardo...

Two remaining issues in gas-gouging case

A Franklin County judge still has two issues to rule on before Kentucky's two-year-old gasoline price-gouging lawsuit against Marathon Oil can proceed to trial...
The suit claims Marathon, Kentucky's largest gasoline wholesaler, and its Speedway and SuperAmerica gas stations gouged consumers for $89 million after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita knocked out refineries on the Gulf Coast in 2005.
Gas prices in Kentucky rose from about $2.50 per gallon to $3 after Katrina hit.
On Monday, Attorney General Jack Conway won an initial victory when Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate rejected Marathon's claims that the law is unconstitutionally vague and violates due process. Wingate also rejected Marathon's assertion that the law vests too much power in the governor, who has authority to declare and lift states of emergency...

Kentucky bears down on prescription drug abuse

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway recently announced that the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) will fund new drug diversion efforts in Eastern Kentucky and enable the state's task force to expand into other areas of the state...
"Prescription drug abuse has claimed far too many lives in Kentucky," said Conway. "While this is a problem that has shattered families across the country, Kentucky led the nation in the use of prescription drugs for nonmedical purposes in 2008. Prescription drug overdoses claimed more than 480 lives in Kentucky last year."...

Pfizer to pay record $2.3B penalty for drug promos

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal prosecutors hit Pfizer Inc. with a record-breaking $2.3 billion in fines Wednesday and called the world's largest drugmaker a repeating corporate cheat for illegal drug promotions that plied doctors with free golf, massages, and resort junkets...
The investigation of the company was triggered by a Pfizer employee in Richmond, Ky., who filed suit in 2006 under the False Claims Act, said James Zerhusen, the U.S. attorney for Kentucky's eastern district.
Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway said the state will receive approximately $5.4 million for Medicaid fraud and consumer protection violations. Kentucky joined a group of other states in legal actions against Pfizer...

Daniel Mongiardo's Campaign Meltdown:

Explanation, please Mongiardo must give words context

It's time for Senate candidate Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo to man up...
What did he mean when he said that being Gov. Steve Beshear's lieutenant governor is like "being married to a whore"? Or that "the only difference between (former Gov. Ernie) Fletcher and Beshear is Beshear has not had a blowup yet, but it is coming"?
The Fletcher administration's "blowup" was a raft of criminal indictments for violating state laws against political interference in hiring. What exactly was Mongiardo implying?...

New Tape Fuels Mongiardo-Beshear Trouble Rumors
Third Tape Calls Governor 'Whore'

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- "It's like being married to a whore." Those words are part of a new Internet audio tape claiming to be Kentucky Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo talking about his relationship with Gov. Steve Beshear.
The tape is the third one to appear online, but they all have similar themes...

Dangerously Sloppy Campaign

Taped snippets from what Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo no doubt thought was a private conversation show up on YouTube, snippets of him expressing -- sometimes in salty language -- his displeasure with some of Gov. Steve Beshear's actions...
...Support the campaign, and win a board appointment. Contribute $1,000, and whisper in the ears of the governor and lieutenant governor.
True, "pay to play" is a standard element in most political campaigns. But candidates who hope to be successful don't run sloppy campaigns that rub voters noses in it.
Indeed, candidates who hope to be successful just don't run sloppy campaigns on any front. Because doing so gives voters the impression -- most likely accurate -- those candidates will be sloppy in their performance if elected to office...

Mongiardo campaign officials seek applicants for appointments by Beshear

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Officials of Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo's campaign for the U.S. Senate are asking supporters for names of candidates for board appointments by Gov. Steve Beshear.
An e-mail sent Monday by Richard Starnes, chief technology officer for the Mongiardo campaign, lists openings on nine state boards and asks that names of potential appointees be sent to Dick Prelopski, the campaign's director of field operations.
"If you know of someone that would be suitable for any of the positions, please e-mail Dick their name along with a resume," Starnes said in the e-mail. "The window of opportunity is relatively short, so please submit the names and resumes as soon as possible."...

Taped conversations highlight Democrats' schism in Kentucky

Two taped conversations in which a Democratic candidate for Senate expresses frustration with the governor and threatens to quit the race have highlighted intra-party schisms in Kentucky, a state in which the party has a chance to win a GOP-held seat.
The conversations, which popped up on a blog supportive of a Republican candidate for the same seat, feature Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo (D) criticizing his boss, Gov. Steve Beshear (D), and using coarse language.
Mongiardo, a longtime advocate of using information technology to reduce healthcare costs and expand availability, was frustrated that Beshear gave the issue to the state's secretary of Health and Family Services. Mongiardo said the secretary, Janie Mills, "knows squat" about the issue...

Another tape of Mongiardo surfaces

FRANKFORT -- Another anonymous audio taping of Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo has popped up on YouTube, the third since last month in which Mongiardo speaks ill of his boss, Gov. Steve Beshear.
On the latest taping, Mongiardo said people he calls around the state first want to "yell" about Beshear. He said his relationship with the governor is like "being married to a whore. What can you do?"
Mongiardo's campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2010 has said the anonymous tapings have been heavily edited, but has not denied their veracity...
