Louisville Metro Councilman and Democratic mayoral candidate Jim King and his ex-wife, Rebecca King have asked a Jefferson County Family Court Judge to seal divorce papers to keep "intensely private matters" from being made public. The Louisville Courier-Journal's Joe Gerth reports: In the first case, filed in 1981 and dropped one month later, Rebecca King accused her husband of physically, emotionally and verbally abusing her, according to a copy of the file obtained by The Courier-Journal earlier this week. Read Gerth's article for more on the court battle that unfolded Friday and how Judge Patricia Walker FitzGerald declined to order the newspaper not to publish details from the divorce papers, which Circuit Clerk David Nicholson says were released to the CJ "by mistake," according to Gerth's story. A telephone poll of the Louisville Mayor's race (not conducted by WHAS11) in recent days has asked voters if they are aware of the Katie King judicial race, whether it affects their support for her father, and how they would vote if the election comes down to Jim King vs. Hal Heiner. But, now the King campaign (assuming they are behind the telephone poll) has something else of which to gauge voters' impressions. In the Courier article, an attorney for Jim King describes the Courier's digging into the King divorce as "a sensational story about gossip." And, King's ex-wife now suggests she may have "embellished" her story during divorce proceedings. From the CJ: The day after filing for divorce, Rebecca King claimed, her husband twisted her hand and choked her after he caught her taking $20 from his wallet to pay for shoes for their youngest daughter. According to the court file, she reported her husband's actions to Louisville police "because she was fearful for her physical safety." Statement from Jim King October 23, 2009 In 1989, Becky King and I divorced. We had three children together and now enjoy the love and company of our six grandchildren. In spite of the difficulties we encountered in our marriage, Becky and I have remained friends. We celebrate holidays and birthdays together with our children and grandchildren. Now, an inquiry has begun into intensely private matters related to our divorce. Becky has requested, and I have agreed, that those documents should be sealed and now lawyers and judges are contemplating that request. No matter what the outcome of that process may be, I will have no comment on these intensely private matters from 20 and almost 30 years ago. I've been deeply involved in public service and the business community here and our private lives have never been an issue. I hope and believe that the people and media in Louisville will respect our privacy. I will have no further comment on this matter. 1 CommentsLeave a comment |
