August 2009 ArchivesThe U.S. Senate campaign of Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo is staying on message. Even today's announcement of the campaign's district field coordinators managed to get a dig in at rival Attorney General Jack Conway's fundraising superiority so far. Mongiardo's Louisville team will be announced in a few weeks. Here is the campaign's news release: Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo's U.S. Senate campaign to... A new WHAS11/Survey USA poll shows that only about one-third of Kentuckians approve of the job Democrat Barack Obama is doing as President, and Republican Jim Bunning is doing as U.S. Senator. Take a look at some stunning numbers. The Obama disapproval rating has to have the GOP licking its chops for the 2010 election. The low Bunning number reenforces Mitch McConnell's efforts to get Bunning out of the 2010 U.S. Senate race. The Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet has released a breakdown of Kentucky's 11% unemployment rate in July. That's up from a 6.6% unemployment rate one year ago.

Jack Conway has served on the board of the Ali Center in Louisville and Ali's wife has already contributed $3000 to his Senate campaign, and now the Louisville legend will appear at a Conway fundraiser next month. The reception is September 16 at the Anchorage home of Jonathan & Jennifer Blum. Jonathan is the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for YUM brands in Louisville. Suggested donations range from $500 to $2400. ...Here is the update sent to Jack Conway supporters in the wake of the WHAS11/Survey USA poll that showed Dan Mongiardo with an 8 point lead in the Democratic primary nine months away. Note: Conway's people are playing the same game as Mongiardo's, deciding to cite an earlie poll that previously was dismissed. Here's the campaign update: Washington Post reporter Chris Cillizza said "Conway has drastical... Odds and ends from the Rand Paul campaign: WHAS11/Survey USA poll that showed Paul trailing Trey Grayson by only 11 points: After GOP advisor dismissed Paul's showing in the poll as a "phantom number:" >> Continue reading: Weekend Rand Paul campaign update While attending to family business in Owensboro, I missed this memo from the Mongiardo campaign re: the WHAS11/Survey USA poll. Politicians may often say that polls don't matter, but when the poll results were released on Tuesday, it sent the campaigns into major spin mode, some overtly. This release from Kim Geveden with the Dan Mongiardo campaign shows both how thrilled they are with the WHAS11/Survey USA poll and how desperate the... The Kentucky Equine Education Project, behind the futile attempt to get the General Assembly to approve "video lottery terminals" at Kentucky racetracks, now aims to unseat the legislators blocking their agenda. First stop, Henderson, with a voter registration drive at Ellis Park, which may or may not be on the verge of extinction. ... Playing catch up with some campaign updates. I have been in Owensboro for a few days. Looking back at this press release from the Trey Grayson Senate campaign (sent out before the Survey USA poll numbers were released), I can't help but draw the contrast between how challenger Rand Paul rolled out his Senate campaign with appearances on Fox News and CNN, and how Trey Grayson is rolling out the traditional whistlestop tour of Kentuck... Here's the release -- more later
Enthusiastic supporters of Rand Paul, a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat from Kentucky, made political online history yesterday. The real-time donation counter at Dr. Paul's website at RandPaul2010.com shows that the campaign has raised over $680,000. The campaign cleared over $430,000 in ... The WHAS11 Survey USA poll of the Kentucky U.S. Senate race continues to reverberate through both parties and all the campaigns. One of the biggest storylines to emerge from the poll is that Bowling Green eye doctor Rand Paul trails the presumptive GOP nominee Secretary of State Trey Grayson by only 11 points among likely voters in the Republican primary. The immediate reaction among the Kentucky Republican establishment was shock. >> Continue reading: Grayson advisor: Rand Paul poll strength a "phantom number" Here is reaction by major candidates to the first independent poll of the U.S. Senate race for the seat being vacated by Jim Bunning. The statements are provided here in the order that they were received by WHAS11.
Statement from Secretary Grayson: "Well, the press loves polls, but voters tend to look more closely at the candidates and their records. While ... Here is the complete Survey USA poll in the Kentucky U.S. Senate race. And, here is Survey USA's analysis: In US Senate Primaries in KY, Republican Grayson & Democrat Mongiardo with Slight Advantage: Nine months until the primary for United States Senator from Kentucky, Republican Trey Grayson and Democrat Dan Mongiardo have a... Mainstream Republicans will be shocked by the early strength for Rand Paul. While among moderates, Trey Grayson has a commanding 50% - 19% lead, among conservatives who may be more motivated to vote in the climate of the off-year election, Grayson leads only by seven points, 35% - 28%. Great news for Rand Paul ahead of his scheduled "moneybomb" internet fundraiser on August 20. It paints him as a legitimate candidate and not a fringe... Attorney General Jack Conway is the fundraising frontrunner, but the WHAS11 Survey USA poll of Kentuckians over the last three days shows Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo with an eight point advantage over Conway in the Democratic primary, 39% to 31% -- a lead that Mongiardo will certainly trumpet in his fundraising efforts. Fayette County official Lillie E. Miller Johnson gets 4%. I expect the first primary poll on the U.S. Senate race in Kentucky sometime today. My hope is to have the numbers in time for the 5pm news on WHAS11. What I anticipate is that we will have the primary numbers at 5pm, and release the poll of head-to-head matchups in the general election at 6pm. And, at some point, I will be able to post all the poll results, incuding the breakdown by demographics, here on the political blog. Thanks ... I missed about 20 minutes of the tele-town hall on healthcare because of having to take another call, but here are a few highlights: Responding to "Beverly," Yarmuth said most small businesses would save money under the plan, despite penalties against small businesses that don't provide health coverage. Rob from Fern Creek asked "what's the rush?" And, Yarmuth repeated his concerns that the bill not be pushed through the House... U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth's first tele-town hall got underway about 6:15 Monday night, 15 minutes late with Press Secretary Trey Pollard introducing him and saying the telephone show was not a replacement for town halls, but "another way to serve the community." Yarmuth said healthcare has been his constiuents' top priority since he ran for office. WHAS11's Chase Cain is monitoring the call and has a report at 10pm and 11pm tonight. ...Here's the schedule for Congressman John Yarmuth's "town halls." The first of three "Teletown halls" is today, with two others August 24 & 25. The traditional town hall is scheduled for September 2. I will pass along details as I am told.
This time, Rand Paul showed up on Glenn Beck's Fox News show. I have to admit I missed this, entirely until reading about it on the Herald-Leader's Bluegrass Politics Blog. They include a link to Paul's interview in which he assails the Obama healthcare plan, saying "Some committee is going to decide what is th... With Louisville poised to replace "Mayor for Life" Jerry Abramson, I am keeping track of possible candidates in the May 2010 primaries and November election. Mayor Jerry Abramson calls President Barack Obama's disaster declaration "a blessing" for people who either did not have insurance or were underinsured for their flash flood losses. It's a blessing amid what seems to be a curse on the Derby City; within the last 11 months, Louisville has weathered a crippling windstorm, icestorm and now a flood that the city estimates will top the $5.2 million threshold in uninsured losses and expenses... New developments today in the race for Louisville mayor, as State Senator Dan Seum (R-Fairdale) announced he will not seek the office, while prominent Louisville attorney Jim Ellis disclosed that he is considering entering the Republican primary. In accepting the endorsement of an Owensboro (Wendell Ford country) labor group, Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo acknowledged the commanding fundraising advantage held by Attorney General Jack Conway in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary. Former State Treasurer Jonathan Mlller, one of the three young guns in statewide politics, has endorsed his fellow Democrat, Jack Conway in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Of those who have, about half say it has no effect on their opinion of Conway. Polling was within the 16 counties in the Louisville DMA. Asked of 800 Adults I am working on a story for tonight (Friday) at 5:30pm regarding the Jack Conway Fancy Farm comments, the youtube video lampooning him and whether it all has affected the campaign. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of KY just spoke on the Senate floor explaining his vote not to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. His remarks follow: ...Just got this statement from the Conway campaign, which indicates Jack Conway would vote YES on the Sonia Sotomayor confirmation. "The tone of confirmation hearings in general has gone to a place that's unproductive. I, like most Americans, believe these hearings should be focused on qualifications not partisanship. I believe that Judge Sotomayor was qualified when President George H.W. Bush appointed her to the Court of Appe... Missed this on my Wednesday day off -- the Tri-State Building and Construction Trades Council, based in Ashland, KY, has endorsed Dan Mongiardo in the Senate race. Republican U.S. Senate candidate Trey Grayson says, if he were in the Senate today, he would reject the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, calling her a judicial activist whose "decisions have contained little reasoning or explanation for her views." Here's the official release from Rand Paul's campaign.
Rand Paul, Bowling Green Eye Surgeon and son of former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, today announces he is officially in the race for the US Senate representing Kentucky. Fairmount Park near St. Louis is ending its live racing this month, citing a lack of revenue from casinos, complicating its inability to compete with racetracks in neighboring states. Fairmount has been around 80 plus years and is Illinois' only racetrack not in the Chicago area. ...Has too much attention been paid to one or two words uttered by Jack Conway at Fancy Farm? Absolutely! But, what else is new? It's an arguable point, but these kinds of distractions can be a test of a candidate's mettle, how they bounce back from challenges (however seemingly trivial), deal with the media, and run a campaign. It could also be argued that, given the incumbent's propensity for making controversial remarks, the cont...
