| Slots Defeat: Start Spreading the News, Romans is (half) leaving »
But after a Kentucky Senate committee voted down a bill to allow video lottery terminals at racetracks, track owner Ron Geary said the 87 year old racetrack would close at the end of the summer meet, on Labor Day.Churchill Downs' John Asher reacted to the news late Monday night. It's not the first time Geary has announced the track was closing. In 2008, he also said Ellis Park would close because of a dispute with horsemen about how revenue from internet wagering was split. 13 CommentsLeave a comment |

Thank you senators! If you REALLY believe the slots is a bad for the poor, why do you not just propose a bill to remove paramutuel racing? You are killing the racetracks. You have blood on your hands. Good luck.
If the horse tracks can't make it, then why should Kentucky bail it out? I am glad it did not pass. Slot machines are crooked and should be against the law.
A bit of an over statment, Pelican.
Horse racing will be just fine. Wait and see.
Espcially, since Kentucky has over one third of the breeding of horses, IN THE WORLD.
Damon Thayer. You have blood on your hands.
Damon Thayer. Have you been gelded?
I cannot remember a time in my life when I have been more disgusted with politicians. These self-serving cretins are killing Kentucky's most valued tradition, its signature industry. And they have the nerve to claim they're doing it to protect the poor? Give me a break. They’ll help the poor by impoverishing everyone employed in KY racing. Yeah, that makes sense.
The people who voted Williams and his ilk into office may have been born yesterday, but I wasn't. Politicians act for one reason only. Self-interest. Self-aggrandizement. Self-promotion. Self. Self. Self. Killing Kentucky racing is somehow enriching these jerks, whether through contributions from developers or other sorts of payoffs I don't know, but this stinks.
I think its rediculous that Kentucky is so against gambling. The tabacco industry in Kentucky has been virtually destroyed, and now we are going to destroy our horse industry. The only problem that I have with the gambling issue is that it seems to only be catering to Churchill Downs. Wasn't it just a few years ago Churchill was dead against legalizing gambling? While I believe that legalizing gambling would be great for our state, I don't believe it should be catering to Churchill Downs like it did in the non-smoking ban.
The Republicans don't care about the effects on the horse racing business. They will sacrifice it because they just don't want it to look like the Democrats did anything good for the state even though everyone knows that the Republicans are a detriment to the society of the common people.
I was in favor of the slots bill; however, with that being said...
Ellis Park has been dying for 20 years. I just do not believe that adding slots wouldn't have saved that track. Why go to Ellis to play the slots when you can drive 15 minutes or less across Evansville and go to a full-fledged casino?
I do not feel sorry for the racetracks or horse crowd, but it is silly to vote against regulated casinos. None of them would be in districts of those senators who oppose them, yet as always those rural legislators would help their constituents to a huge amount of the tax revenue generated by economic activity in the state's urban areas.
If gambling is so wrong then al the politicians need to quit putting their money into a 401k. What's the difference?
As far as Ellis dying. Isn't that for Geary to decide?
Now back to the original question:
Damon Thayer: Have you been gelded?
For those in Kentucky. Someone needs to find out how this man has been paid off and what's in it for his pocketbook. I "suspect" something!
Or, has Damon been gelded?
Damon Thayer: you need to answer to this or who is lining your pockets?
