Naming rights? Abramson says call it "Host Arena"

After a one hour walk through of the Louisville Arena construction site, Mayor Jerry Abramson joked that the still unnamed arena should simply be called "Host Arena," after Arena Authority Chairman Jim Host. Abramson added that Host would have to buck up $30 million to $40 million. For his part, Host said that he would have an update on the naming rights at the July authority meeting.

Like an energetic football coach, Host clapped the meeting to order and closed off questions in the same manner.

A few other highlights:

  • A Mortensen Construction exec says state investigators tell him that the official report on the April 27 concrete collapse should be released by the end of June.
  • Host says to expect an announcement within 6 weeks to 2 months regarding conventions coming to Louisville because of the arena. He says one is returning for the first time in 30 years.
    • Mortensen says the current cost of construction with about 300 workers on site is $1000 per minute.
  • About 30 people walked on the tour, including representatives from all four TV news stations, two radio stations, the Courier-Journal, LEO and blogger Rick Redding.
