The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is reminding candidates to keep their signs off the public right-of-way or they may begin air polluting bonfires with them (not really they'll just throw them in full landfill). Here's the news release: Transportation Cabinet warns against campaign signs on state rights of way Will be confiscated and held until owners retrieve FRANKFORT, Ky. - With fall elections nearing, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) reminds candidates and their supporters that campaign signs are not allowed along state rights of way. "Our preference is that campaign signs be placed on privately owned property," Transportation Secretary Joe Prather said. "We want to support and encourage the democratic process, but not at the expense of our motorists' safety. We absolutely appreciate the cooperation received in years past from all of the various campaigns. " Signs of any type - for campaigns, yard sales, other advertising - can create a traffic hazard when illegally placed on state right of way. Depending on size and construction, illegal signs can be a distraction and vision blocker to drivers. They also can hinder right-of-way operations such as mowing and pose a direct safety hazard to motorists who run off the roadway. All signs will be removed from state right of way and housed at each of KYTC's county maintenance facilities for 30 days. Owners can retrieve their signs at these locations between regular business hours, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
