No, I am not in St. Paul for the Republican National Convention, but we are staying in contact with KY delegates. Here are some quotes and observations from the Gustav shortened Day 1:

KY Sec. of State Trey Grayson on the convention getting back on track:

"I think we'll see a balloon drop after a great speech by John McCain."

Grayson on Palin:

"She's very well versed with energy and she's very well versed with what Alaska and the rest of the country has to offer from a supply standpoint and also pretty well versed on the demand side as well. We have to do both, increase supply and decrease demand.
So it's great to have one of the foremost experts in the country on the ticket on an issue that both sides recognize is probably one of the most importatn if not the most important issue of the day."

Grayson is the Energy chair for the GOP platform committee, which he says balances supply and demand with concern for global warming.

On the revelation that Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant:

"I empathize with her as a parent. it's tough raising children and you don't know what's going to happen and I'm glad her daughter is keeping the baby, and I'm glad her family is going to stay togetehr and work to overcome this issue."

"I really really feel for her daughter. It's a tough situation anyway and to have to deal with all the attention she's going to get now will make a tough situation even tougher."

Alternate Delegate Todd Inman of Owensboro says McCain's choice of Palin is a "bold move," that has reenergized the party.

Inman on the Palin daughter pregnancy:

"I think what it does for Gov. Palin versus anything else, is it humanizes her. It says that she's going througth the same things that a lot of families throughout the U.S. are going through."

"With the rise of pregnancies, mothers who are out of wedlock, it's no longer the exception, so it's something she's dealing with and it shows with her background, characteristics and experiecne, that she can really relate to the normal American, where you may see on the other side of the spectrum that people are saying they may not be able to relate."

"We all love the biography, we love the background, we love what we know. we just want to get to know her more."

GOP Strategist Scott Jennings:

"There's no question that the gas price issue remains a top issue in this campaign."

"Adding Sarah Palin to the ticket only serves to reenforce the central message of the Republican Party, we are the party that is for a comprehensive 'all of the above' energy solution."

"I think the pick of Gov. Palin shows us the Republican party has a very easy to understand, simple message on energy. We're going to drill. We're going to find more. We're going to use less. We're going to invest in new technology. We're going to use clean coal, good for Kentucky. And, we're going to do it all right now."

Big splash at convention, actor Jon Voight promoting an anti-Michael Moore movie.

The GOP Convention will gavel in at 6pm Tuesday with a call for more charity in the wake of Gustav. Later, Rudy Giuliani is the keynote speaker.
